Young Dan shows his skill

Boxing

-

Whitstable School of Boxing youngster Dan Cohen continued his remarkable rise with a dominant display at the St Mary’s ABC show in Chatham on Saturday night.

The 10-year-old took on the host club’s Henry Wilson in a skills bout at Lordswood Leisure Centre.

Whitstable coach Kevin Place said: “Dan’s opponent was a nice boxer and it was a close first round but once Dan got to grips with him, he got more and more on top the longer it went on.

“He did well in the second and third rounds and we are looking to arrange a return at our own show on April 8.”

Place added: “Dan boxed as an orthodox for a year or so but in the last five or six weeks he has changed to southpaw and he has come on leaps and bounds.”

Whitstable’s Charlie Hayes looks to return to winning ways when she fights on the West Ham show tomorrow (Friday) night.

George Elms, Ronnie Murray, George Theze and Alfie Sutcliffe will all be back in action before the club’s dinner show, to be held at the King’s Hall, Herne Bay, on Friday, April 8.

Place said: “We have had 15 boxers out this season, 12 of them have wonm with three losing on split decisions. The gym is looking good and the club is doing well.

“We’re looking forward to having 11 of our boys fighting at our show.”

One of Place’s former students, Whitstable’s James Chiericato, suffered defeat in his first bout in nearly a year on Saturday. The 27- year- old super featherweight last turned out in the points victory against Ibrar Riaz in London last May.

However, the southpaw’s return to action at Medway Park ended in a points defeat against 25-year-old fighter Luke Fash, who had lost all three of his previous fights.

Chiericato, the taller man, made good use of his jab early on but in the second round Fash inflicted a cut above Chiericato’s left eye. In the final two rounds, Fash took control and referee Ian John-lewis scored the fight 40-36 in his favour.

It was an unwelcome return for Chiericato to the Gillingham venue, where he suffered his only previous defeat in six bouts, to Ben Zacharkiw in September, 2013.

pro Neil Parry returns to action with his third fight at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Saturday night.

The 22-year-old welterweight won both his first two bouts on points at the venue, most recently against Alec Bazza in early December.

His is set to take on the more experienced Jason Nesbitt. The 42-year-old from Birmingham has lost 191 of his 205 fights and 34 of his last 35.
