Persuasive girls win the argument

-

Pupils from the Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar School won first place in a national debating competition at Eton College.

In a debate on the future of the Brazilian rainforest, Elisa MonjeJelfs, 17, and Cleo Gravett, 16, successfully argued that Brazils’s need to develop was more important than the conservation of the forest.

Nick Hayes, assistant head, said: “The school’s win was incredibly impressive as not only did Elisa claim a place at the final with an amazing piece of creative writing but the girls beat competition from some of the UK’S top schools during a very lively day of debate and discussion.

“We are very proud of the achievements of all the girls.”

Also taking part in the debate were Brigitte Davison and Iona Selman, both 17, who reached the final.
