Design becomes reality

-

Celebrating the simple beauty of wood was the aim of a family day in Canterbury.

The Abbots Mill Project, a social enterprise which aims to rejuvenate a section of riverside land off St Radigund’s Street, put on a variety of activities for parents and children.

It also saw the realisation of a design competition held last year.

Entrants were invited to submit designs for a piece of sycamore.

The winner was Alasdair Simpson, who watched as Steve Andrews, of Tribal Animal Carving, transformed it into the bench he had designed.

The 15-year-old from Wincheap said: “It was amazing to see my design become a reality. I couldn’t believe how Steve took my drawing and made it what I meant it to be.”

Jo Kidd, who co-founded the project, added: “We would like to send a huge thanks to everyone who braved the wintry weather to help at, and support, our Abbots Mill Project celebration of wood event.

“We hope that people will come and visit our site and enjoy sitting on the new bench.”
