Demelza day a huge success

Chislet Bowls Club’s third annual bowling tournament raised more than £ 3,000 for Demelza children’s hospice.

The bowling and the weather were superb and a final total of £ 3,407 was raised to take the club past the £10,000 mark in the three years the event has been organised by Stan and Sue Knott.

To help raise the money, they held lunches, raffles and plant sales throughout the year and on the day there was a raffle and also a silent auction.

More than 70 bowlers from around the area made up 24 teams with the overall winning team George Long, Liz Long and Sandra Swann from Canterbury BC who were presented with the trophy by Leila Ilkhan representi­ng Demelza.

Whitstable won four and drew another of the six rinks played at Chislet in the Catherine Wheeler League as the hosts lost by 45 shots overall. Chislet 73 Whitstable 118 Alan Spokes, Rick Eames, Marion Rigden lost 22-12; Pat Rogers, Michael Tomassi, Leslie Eames drew 14-14; Malcolm Harris, Diana Kirkbank, Tony Kirkbank won 17-15; Bob Elsea, Derek Walker, Chris Tomassi lost 18-13; Michael Holmes, Wilf Laughton, Sue Clarke lost 21-5; Jack Cramp, Jim Harlow, Val Philpott lost 28-12.

In the Cox Challenge Cup, Chislet’s home team of Michael Holmes, Michael Blackband, Wilf Laughton and Alan Spokes went down 23-16 to Hythe, while the away team of Jack Cramp, Jim Harlow, Malcolm Harri and Tony Bailey were beaten 26-14.

Chislet headed to Eltham, their visitors last summer but lost on four of the six rinks and by 48 shots overall. Eltham 118 Chislet 70 Clive Vurnum, Jean Trussell, Charles Trevette lost 18-10; Malcolm Harris, Diane Kirkbank, Tony Kirkbank won 22-14; Michael Holmes, Wilf Laughton, Sue Clarke lost 23-5; Derek Trussell, Derek Walker, Colin Rogers lost 23-7; Jack Cramp, Jim Harlow, Val Philpott won 17-13; alan Spokes, Dave Cowley, Derek Clarke lost 27-9.

Faversham bounced back with a 26-shot success playing in the East Kent Mixed Triples League against Barham. Faversham 100 Barham 74 Steph Flower, T.schofield, K.neame lost 20-19; B.meadows, Margaret Wills, J.harris won 20-15; G.ashurst, M.butt, Sheila Howard won 23-16; R.cordell, Barbara Franklin, J.winslow won 18-14; B.crump, D.mitchell, Janet Wimble won 20-9.

The club went down by 11 shots at home to Rochester Faversham 78 Rochester 89 P.j.evans, J.graham, J.fullagar won 19-15; B.meadows, J.doyle, D.evenden lost 24-12; Steph Flower, B.crump, K.jackson won 27-14; M.ramsden, Linda Abbott, K.neame lost 12-11; M.woodward, P.evans, D.mitchell lost 24-9.

Faversham, hosted the Industrial Bowls Tournament on Sunday with the cup won by Kelly Smith Transport ahead of Shepherd Neame. Plate winners were City Electrial Factors with MME Engineerin­g the runners-up. Brian Whittaker, Mike Best, Roy Piles won 19-18.

Boughton went down by eight shots in a friendly at Cheriton. Cheriton 105 Boughton 97 Ron Piper, Helen Mcneil and Phil Philpott won 26-7; Tony West, Neville Taylor, John Agate won 17-16.

The club enjoyed a 21-shot success against visiting Ash. Boughton 83 Ash 62 Barbara Hadler, Nigel Dawkins, Mick Nichol won 217; Tony West, Karen Gentry, Charles Marsh won 15-9; Dennis Creed, Helen Mcneil, John Harris won 18-12; Brian Peterson, Ron Moss, Neville Taylor won 16-14.

Boughton claimed two points from a 46-shot loss at Birchingto­n in the Catherine Wheeler League. Boughton 89 Birchingto­n 135 Ron Piper, Lynn Hall, Phil Philpott won 21-15. against six rinks representi­ng the Kent President & Council and won by 92 shots overall. Canterbury 169 Kent President & Council 77 Tom Nelson, Ian Mitchell, Alan Marsh, Ian Burton won 40-5; Chris Dawson, Roger Blissett, George Long, Malcolm Nicholson won 27-9; Brian Wheeler, Dave Rickard, Michael Hutchinson, Colin Strouts won 2614; Peter Needham, Michael Lloyd, Brian White, Mike Talbot won 21-16; Duncan Ellis, Mick Doyle, Mervyn Gulvin, Dave Charlton won 24-12; Bob Keen, Dave Swann, Alan Burnap, Bernard Woodhams drew 21-21.

The club won all six rinks against Whitstable in the Forest of Blean League. Whitstable 66 Canterbury 135 Dave Rickard, Roger Blissett, Colin Strouts won 30-9; Bryan Nicholson, Alan Marsh, Dave Todd won 23-11; Dave Holmes, Brian White, Tony Dobson won 20-8; Tom Nelson, Mike Talbot, Steve Wells won 17-11; Ian Burton, Dave Charlton, Jeff Vane won 22-14; Malcolm Price, Mervyn Gulvin, Malcolm Nicholson won 23-13.

Canterbury edged to a 12shot victory over Thanet after winning four of the six rinks. Canterbury 111 Thanet 99 Wyn Brooks, Pauline Darling, Michael Doyle won 25-11; Keith Wright, Roger Gowan, Carole Nelson won 19-12; Sandra Swann, Dave Jenkins, Pauline Darling lost 25-14; Jill Jenkins, Russell Feast, Dave Swann won 18-17; Peter Needham, Wendy Wright, Keith Brooks lost 25-13; Liz Long, Brian Wheeler, Mervyn Gulvin won 22-9.

The Herne Bay Trophy played between Canterbury and Herne Bay was drawn when each side won three rinks and the final score was also level. Herne Bay 99 Canterbury 99 Peter Needham, George Long, Colin Goldsack lost 2613; Brian Wheeler, Dave Rickard, Colin Strouts won 16-13; Malcolm Price, Clive Hutchings, Dave Swann won 15-10; Michael Doyle, Roger Gowan, Michael Hutchinson lost 17-12; Ian Mitchell, Dave Jenkins, Bernard Woodhams won 25-14; Bob Keen, Keith Wright, Ian Burton lost 19-18.

In the Ladies Dover League, Canterbury had good wins on both rinks against St Margaret’s. Cantebury 44 St Margaret’s 18 Liz Long, Yvonne Gambrill, Sue Close won 22-8; Madelaine Mcconomy, Roz Cheeseman, Carole Nelson won 22-10.

Canterbury ladies suffered a heavy defeat at Herne Bay, beaten on five of the six rinks and by 40 shots overall. Herne Bay 115 Canterbury 75 Val Hughes, Sandra Swann, Marion Patmore lost 20-10; Sue Trott, June Baker, Sue Close lost 17-10; Maureen Aitkin, Madelaine Mcconomy, Yvonne Gambrill lost 20-12; Liz Long, Jean Bourner, Heather Goldsack lost 18-16; Pat Vaughan, Rosemary Wheeler, Carole Nelson lost 30-13; Rowena Laming, Jill Jenkins, Barbara Grundy won 14-10.

The club suffered defeat on every triple as visiting Canterbury ran riot with a 79-shot victory in the Forest of Blean League to leave Whitstable pointless. Whitstable 66 Canterbury 135 Trevor Hall, Jim Ratcliffe, Gerry Hender lost 17-11; Brian Gentle, Paul Browning, Tony Petts lost 22-14; Peter Boeg, Malcolm Scott, John New lost 23-13; Ron Pring, Chris Twyman, Alan Reid lost 23-11; Ray Mcdonald, Trevor Epps, Brian Reynolds lost 20-8; Phil Gardiner, Jim Carey, Brian Watson lost 30-9.

Minster ladies won on two of the three triples played at Whitstable and by nine shots overall. Whitstable 47 Minster 56 Barbara Mcgillicud­dy, Patricia Uden, Diane Coupland won 22-15; Jeanette May, Linda Lane, Margaret Morris lost 21-13; Patricia Vaz, Maggie Porter, Gail Phasey lost 20-12.
