Open reaches fitting conclusion

Whitstable BC hosted their annual Maggie Allen Memorial Open Triples competitio­n which attracted 20 teams of ladies from nine local clubs.

Maggie had been landlady of the Monument in St Dunstans, Canterbury and latterly administra­tor of the Kent Postgradua­te Medical Centre at K&C Hospital as well as secretary of Whitstable BC, so it was perhaps fitting that the trophy winners were from Canterbury with runners-up from Canterbury and Whitstable.

Julie Baker, Ros Cheeseman and Val Hughes were winners ahead of Carole Nelson, Liz Long and Jill Jenkins with Whitstable’s Barbara Mcgillicud­dy, Daphne Ellinor and Patricia Vaz in third.

Whitstable edged to a two-shot win in their Catherine Wheeler League clash at Boughton to claim 12 points to the hosts’ five. Boughton 95 Whitstable 97 Bob Davey, Ronald Vaz, Barbara Mcgillicud­dy won 23-14; Philip Gardiner, Shirley Whitehand, Brian Watson won 19-13; Tony Petts, Patricia Vaz, Paul Browning won 18-14; Garth Coates, John New, Daphne Ellinor drew 13-13; Peter Boeg, Norman Tilley, Joan Davey lost 19-12; Ray Mcdonald, Christophe­r Twyman, Sylvia Hender lost 22-12.

Whitstable’s men also split the six triples played at Boughton in the Forest of Blean League two days later, although they were beaten by 12 shots overall to take three points to Boughton’s five. Boughton 103 Whitstable 91 Brian Gentle, Paul Browning, Tony Petts won 24-13; Phil Gardiner, Jim Carey, Brian Watson won 17-13; Peter Boeg, Malcolm Scott, John New won 20-17; Ron Pring, Chris Twyman, Alan Reid lost 15-13; Trevor Hall, Don Minnett, Garth Coates lost 20-12; Ray Mcdonald, Trevor Epps, Brian Reynolds lost 25-5.

Canterbury Ladies split six triples at Whitstable but won overall by 28 shots. Whitstable 74 Canterbury 102 Barbara Mcgillicud­dy, Jean Harman, Margaret Goodger won 15-11; Daphne Ellinor, Maggie Porter, Margaret Morris won 14-11; Sylvia Hender, June Sutcliffe, Kath Tilley won 18-16; Alison Gardiner, Beryl Barton, Pat Uden lost 16-10; June Ratcliffe, Peggy Wray, Rosemary Field lost 18-11; Patricia Vaz, Patricia Buchan, Diane Coupland lost 30-6. Oyster IBC enjoyed a 24-shot overall win over visiting Swale. Oyster 106 Swale 82 Colin Chapman, Margaret Dance, Brian Gambrill won 26-7; Maurice O’dell, Peter Field, Hilary Avis lost 17-11; Lynda Balding, Derek Whamond, Chris Benneworth lost 24-19; Rita Marsh, Don Keeler, John Cheesman won 21-10; Maralyn Whamond, Ruth Emert, Roger Benneworth won 19-6; Carol Field, Colin Marsh, Gordon Hayes lost 18-10.

The Oyster won on all six rinks at home to Thanet and by 56 shots overall. Oyster 127 Thanet 71 Ken Shorter, Irene Godfrey, Gordon Hayes won 22-12; Ann Moon, Brian Gambrill, Sue Swan won 30-8; Barbara Talbot, Fred Masters, John Day won 25-16; Doreen Masters, Frank Rose, Jan Allen won 17-11; Jean Rose, John Baker, Jacqueline Harvey won 14-13; Ann Williams, Marion Harrison, Eddie Swan won 18-11. six rinks. Visiting Ramsgate were beaten by 26 shots in a mixed match at Bay. Herne Bay 104 Ramsgate 78 John Dryland, John Grogan, Eunice Holder won 15-13; Sam Hardy, Edie Nicholls, Dawn Harris lost 16-9; Linda Cheeseman, Joyce Whitlock, Jim Watson won 27-6; Martin Maguire, Marianne Offer, David Knight won 22-13; Cath Watson, Alan Jordan, Peter Gibson lost 17-13; Vicky Lewis, Diane Wiltshire, John Offer won 18-13.

Bay eased to a 32-shot win against Windmill, winning four of the five rinks. Herne Bay 110 Windmill 78 Steve Caruth, John Phillips, Paul Evans, Jim Watson won 28-12; Sam Hardy, Alan Jordan, John Toms, Jeff Graham won 25-11; Harry Algar, Martin Maguire, Roy Chillingwo­rth, Colin Holder won 21-16; John Dryland, John Offer, Jim Covill, Alf Collar won 24-14; Ted Milton, Mike Tibby, Andy Cattanach, Ray Chipperfie­ld lost 25-12.

Civil Service inflicted a 10-shot defeat on hosts Bay in another mixed match, winning five of the eight rinks. Herne Bay 144 Civil Service 154 (Mixed Match) Val Keleghar, Alan Jordan, Ronnie Phillips, Steve Caruth won 33-8; Tony Bombone, Danny Keleghar, Sheila Mcdowell, Gill Baker lost 32-10; Sam Hardy, Wendy Green, Roy Chillingwo­rth, Dawn Harris lost 17-13; Jeanette O’brien, Sheila Tibby, Brenda Bridges, Bruce Clayton lost 18-13; Pat Knight, Mike Tibby, Maureen Simcock, David Knight lost 22-10; George Johnson, Lyn Phillips, John Grogan, Barbara Morris won 28-20; Sylvia Sweeting, Harry Algar, John Phillips, Eunice Holder lost 18-16; Martin Maguire, Sue Grogan, Diane Wiltshire, Tony Ackland won 21-19. in the Catherine Wheeler League clash at Thanet on Sunday, winning on just two rinks to claim four league points to their hosts’ 13. Boughton 85 Thanet 119 Ron Piper, Brenda Watson, Phil Philpott won 19-13; Ann Cousins, Mick Wellington, Charles Marsh won 19-17.

The previous day, Boughton had lost on just one rink in a 42-shot friendly win against Cheriton. Boughton 116 Cheriton 74 Brenda Watson, Nigel Dawkins, Mick Nichol won 20-11, Neville Taylor, John Harris, Colin Hadler won 17-15; Dennis Hawkins, Ron Moss, John Agate won 26-7; Karen Gentry, Dennis Creed, Roy Piles won 26-10; Bill Beacon, Geoff Hall, Lena Rogers won 14-11.

Boughton overcame Folkestone by 11 shots despite splitting the four rinks played. Boughton 71 Folkestone 60 Roy Tamplin, Vic Raye, Lena Rogers won 22-12; Bill Beacon, Karen Gentry, Colin Hadler won 21-10.

In the latest Forest of Blean League game, Boughton overcame Whitstable by 12 shots despite splitting the threee rinks to claim eight points. Boughton 103 Whitstable 91 Brian Whittaker, Mike Best, Roy Piles won 15-13; Richard Brown, Geoff Hall, Colin Hadler won 20-12; Ron Piper, Trevor Lyons, Phil Philpott won 25-5.

Boughton were edged out by one shot in their Catherine Wheeler League encounter with Whitstable, having to settle for six points. Boughton 96 Whitstable 97 Brian Gentry, Helen Mcneil, Roy Piles won 19-12; Lena Rogers, Geoff Hall, Neville Taylor won 22-12. Barham went down by five shots in a friendly at home to Wear Bay on Sunday. Barham 60 Wear Bay 65 Norman Armstrong, Linda Lewis, Neil Sladden lost 20-13; Eira Osborne, Rita Smith, Graham Beasant won 22-17; Linda Marshall, Richard Grayson, Phil Cross lost 13-12; Hazel Hatton, Dennis Rose, Ray Hatton lost 15-13.

Barham suffered a 17-shot loss in a friendly at home to Hythe on Saturday, winning two and drawing one of six triples. Barham 82 Hythe 99 Mike Hurlock, Pat Kusel, Ralph Watts lost 21-9; Eira Osborne, Rita Cleaver, Phil Cross lost 17-13; Eric Marsh, Jan Wright, Brian White won 16-13; Dennis Rose, Kim Curtis, Damian Conroy lost 22-16; Hazel Hatton, Richard Grayson, Ray Hatton drew 12-12; Sian Grayson, Mick Bullman, Selwyn Lewis won 16-14. lost 18-15; Yvonne Gambrill, Mike Doyle, Bill Hillman lost 18-16; Maureen Aitkin, Bob Keen, George Long won 21-15; Liz Long, Tom Nelson, Michael Hutchinson lost 21-19; Mervyn Gulvin, Karin Walker, Ian Burton won 18-11.

Abandoned after only nine ends, Canterbury Ladies were one shot behind River Bowls Club when torrential rain stopped play. Moira Austin, Rosemary Wheeler, Pauline Darling lost 9-7; Gail Hone, Maureen Dilnot, Sue Close lost 8-5; Wyn Brooks, Wendy Wright, Sue Mates won 8-4.

Canterbury collected their third maximum point win in the Forest of Blean League picking up eight from Faversham, winning convincing­ly on all rinks. Canterbury 147 Faversham 66 Dave Rickard, Roger Blissett, Alan Cornfoot won 23-17; Dave Holmes, Brian White, Tony Dobson won 39-6; Malcolm Price, Mervyn Gulvin, Malcolm Nicholson won 17-13; Brian Nicholson, Colin Strouts, Dave Todd won 20-11; Tom Nelson, Mike Talbot, Steve Wells won 21-10; Ian Burton, Dave Charlton, Chris Dawson won 24-9.

Canterbury Ladies overcame Whitstable by 28 shots. Canterbury beat North East Kent Police by eight shots after winning three of the five rinks. Canterbury 84 NE Kent Police 76 Bob Keen, Val Hughes, Colin Strouts won 17-13; Roger Gowan, Mike Doyle, Colin Goldsack won 18-14; Keith Wright, Mike Hutchinson, Bernard Woodhams lost 17-14; Don Parry, Christiana De Weduwe, Brian Nicholson won 21-14; Peter Needham, Bill Hillman, Chris Dawson lost 18-14.
