Double-ton brothers in battle for top score

Kent Regional League

-

Buzz Gould says sibling rivalry was the reason that records tumbled in Littlebourne’s win against Folkestone 3rds.

Younger brother Sully Gould hit 211 in the previous Sunday’s Kent Village League recordsmashing 310-run win over Egerton and Buzz revealed he set his stall out to usurp his brother’s performance in Saturday’s Kent Regional League, Division 1A East clash with Folkestone.

He said: “I went out there to try and beat his score from the previous week. I managed to do it and got to 228 but unfortunately when I got out he still had another six or seven overs on me.

“I called it as I walked off, he was only on 120 or 130 but I said he’d go and beat it and he did. I probably had the record for less than an hour.”

Sully scored 232 to pass Buzz by four runs and steer Bourne towards their record total of 518-3 from 40 overs before dad Graham continued the family affair with a superb 5-14 as the visitors were dismissed for just 48 in reply to seal a 470-run win.

Buzz said: “It wasn’t anything against Folkestone, they are a young team but they did not bowl badly. We just batted exceptionally.

“It was a lovely day for batting and a good toss to win – there were records there to be broken and we said ‘let’s do that.’”

He added: “It’s the usual battle between brothers to see who is better – it’s brotherly love at it’s best. Sadly at the moment, it’s probably him. But I am not done yet.”

Worth are next in the firing line on Saturday and Gould added: “It’s a new ground and a team we don’t know too well. It’s nice to play that type of game. Obviously 233 and beyond is the new target – though knowing me I won’t last 30 overs and he’ll get another chance to overtake me again.”

The pair are the leading scorers in the league with both passing 600 runs, although Buzz has done so in nine innings to his brother’s 11.

George Laslett claimed 3-56 and Richard Ewart top scored with 38 but Ash were bowled out for 134 at Borstal after restricting the hosts to 197-8 from 46 overs in Championship East.

Former England women’s player Susie Rowe starred for Canterbury 3rds as her 93 inspired them to a five-wicket victory at Margate in !A East.

Gate piled-on 216-3 from 40 overs but Rowe and James Gray (57) put on 86 for the fourth wicket to see Canterbury home.

Stephen Malkin’s 54 was in vain for Littlebourne 2nds as they went down by 123 runs at Leeds & Broomfield in 2A East after allowing the hosts to post 299-6.

Kevin Hopper’s unbeaten 53 helped Street End sneak a dramatic one-wicket win at home to fellow strugglers Stowting in 1B East from the final ball after the visitors had scored 165-5.

In the same division, Sturry suffered a 21-run loss at home to Ramsgate Corinthian, despite Terry Mcdonald’s 3-44 and David Hards scoring 44 in reply to the visitors’ 190 all-out.

Jeremy Taylor hit 75 not out and claimed 2-7 off his only over with the ball as Herne Bay won by nine wickets at Ash 2nds in 2B East.

The hosts were bowled out for 112 with Tom Hill claiming 3-17 despite Aiden Michaels’ 43.

Ben Rutherford scored 111 not out and Nick Denly retired with 73 not out as Whitstable 3rds posted 246-2 against Margate 2nds in the same division. Tom Gill-pratt (320) and Ben Rutherford (3-48) as Whitstable won by 92 runs.
