Debutants to the fore as winning run continues
Some new faces helped Pilgrims to extend their winning Zoo League run to five games with a 26-20 success against Redingensians 2nds.
Debutants Charlie Fatoma and Andre Allen both scored tries and Fatoma landed three conversions as the city side came from behind in the second half.
Centre Fatoma scored the opening try and made another for captain James Shaw, both converted, but it was Redingesians who took a one-point lead into half-time.
Three tries, two from the backs and a pushover from an experienced home pack, left Canterbury with problems to solve.
After the break, they were still being out muscled but missed a penalty chance and then saw the home side’s pressure earn them a fourth unconverted try to stretch the lead to six points.
Then another Pilgrims debutant, Elliot White, was instrumental in turning the game. From one of his powerful runs, the ball broke to the backs and full-back Barney Howard scored out wide.
The winning try was built on a surging effort from Callum Stuckey, which was carried on by Simon Jaynes and Fatoma who fed Allen for a great finish.
Fatoma added the extras to keep Canterbury, for whom No.8 Jamie Stephens was in outstanding form, on their upward path.
