Youngsters end the year on a high at festive gala

Bella Holt and Nathan Williams led the way as Faversham swimmers enjoyed an outstandin­g day at the Thanet Festive Open.

The squad were competing for the final time in 2016 and went out with a bang, collecting a staggering 29 medals, smashing 14 club records and achieving eight Kent county qualifying times.

Holt swam herself into the record books in all her races, gaining a gold medal in the 10 years 100m breaststro­ke (1.41.62, PB and Kent Time) and the 50m breaststro­ke (46.02 PB).

She then collected silvers in the 200m freestyle (2.41.06 PB and KT) and 100m backstroke (1.27.59 PB and KT).

Her older sister Emily snatched gold medals in the 14 years 200m freestyle (2.18.50 PB and CR) and the 50m breaststro­ke and added to her collection with silvers in the backstroke over 100m (1.17.55 PB) and 200m. Max Fordyce, 11, won golds in the 50m backstroke (38.80 PB and CR), 50m freestyle and 100m/200m breaststro­ke to which he added silvers in the 50m breaststro­ke, 200m freestyle and 50m fly.

He finished off his medal haul with SOUTHERN COUNTIES east League Premier Division

Rebecca Crouch won gold medals in the 17+ 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle while Amy Coupe claimed two club records in her races and won a bronze medal in the 13 years 50m backstroke (34.98 PB) with Eva Mcintyre establishi­ng a club best in the 13 years 200m freestyle (2.29.32 PB).

Mia Kirk produced excellent swims to take silver in the 14 years 100m freestyle and bronze in both the 50m freestyle and 50m fly.

Faversham swimmers were joined at Margate by competitor­s from Beachfield, Dover, Folkestone and Herne Bay.

They sat enthralled during an assembly where they watched highlights of his twotry, man-of-the-match performanc­e against Australia and were able to hear first-hand about the excitement of being called up for internatio­nal duty Huw then spoke about life as a profession­al rugby player in South Africa where he currently plays, before finishing off with some tales from his own school days at JKS including his favourite subjects, best teachers and top sporting memories. After an enjoyable but exhausting lunch time during which he signed hundreds of autographs, Huw joined the under-13a rugby team for a training session when he passed on some tips and advice.
