-

Two football clubs are celebrating after receiving a £250 grant from UK Power Networks, as part of the company’s Team Sport Award Scheme. Herne Bay Wanderers and Sturry Kings were nominated to receive the money by employees from the power company, Andy Lee and Justin Straffon. Andy, who is an engineer for the power company and coaches Wanderers’ Under-7s, said: “I started coaching the team three years ago as my son Alfie plays for them. “The squad needed some new training goals and footballs so I applied for the grant. “I couldn’t believe it when we got it, it was such a surprise and we are all so thankful.” Wanderers aim to develop players to play at the best possible standard, in all areas, and works closely with them to improve their individual and team work skills. The club have four teams ranging from under-5s to under-8s. Justin Straffon, who is also an engineer and coaches the Sturry Kings, said: “I helped to form the under-7s team a few years ago, which my son Tylar now plays for. “There are now two under-7 teams and we have to train indoors during the winter months, which requires special indoor footballs, which we needed to buy. “The club received the Team Sport Award grant last year which was a massive help and this year it has gone towards the new footballs, allowing us to prepare for the start of the league in January, so we are grateful.” Sturry Kings Football Club have various age groups playing in the East Kent Youth League and the Faversham Friendly League. Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. Last year, nearly £13,000 was donated to sporting groups connected to UK Power Networks staff.
