Stabbings are a sign of the times, say worried residents

Residents claim crime is blighting a once close-knit community after two men were stabbed in a suspected gang attack.

People living in Starle Close, Canterbury, told the Gazette of their concerns after the 21-yearolds were knifed in nearby Plumpton Walk on Thursday.

Police, forensics teams and ambulance crews descended on the area, and the force helicopter circled overhead as officers looked for the perpetrators. by Emma Grafton-williams egraftonwilliams@thekmgroup.co.uk

The two victims were taken to a local hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Three teenagers – aged 17, 18 and 19 – were arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and later bailed until June 15.

It is thought all those involved are eastern European.

Gwen Evans, who has lived in Starle Close for 37 years, said: “The area has changed a lot. We get a lot of people rowing in the blocks over the road and the police turn up. I just keep myself to myself.

“Years ago everyone used to know each other but now I don’t know anyone around here anymore.”

Another neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: “I have lived here for 23 years and it has got worse over the last few.

“Drug dealing is happening all of the time – and the police know about it.”

Officers remained at the scene throughout Friday, where an alleyway was cordoned off as investigations took place.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information should contact Kent Police on 01843 222289 quoting reference number ZY/021340/17.
