Canterbury scratch player Josh Bristow bounced back from a disappointing performance in the English Men’s Open Amateur Championship at Woodhall Spa to set a new amateur course record in winning the Lamberhurst Open on Monday.

The 21-year-old failed to make the halfway cut at Woodhall Spa on Friday, playing well below his best to shoot rounds of 80 and 85 over the par-73 layout.

Only the top 63 players from a field of 148 went through to the final two rounds.

The tournament was eventually won by South African Kyle Mcclatchie, whose 10-under-par 282 earned him the Brabazon Trophy.

Bristow returned to Kent earlier than planned but that enabled him to compete in the Lamberhurst Open, a Kent orderof-merit event and he lowered his own course record there with an outstanding six-under-par 66 in the opening round, making eagle at the last to shave a stroke off his previous best.

His morning round included two eagles, three birdies and a bogey and he followed with an afternoon round of four-under 68 that featured an eagle, five birdies and three bogeys.

His 10-under-par total secured victory by six strokes. There were three different Canterbury golfers Josh Bristow and Margaret Francis

competition winners at Canterbury Golf Club this week.

Margaret Francis scored a net 68 to win the Challenge Cup, an 18-hole medal format open to all winners of the monthly and Stableford events across the year.

Val Binns (net 71) was second and Lyn Lee (net 72) third.

Lee continued her good form by winning the Macmillan Spoons Stableford with a

score of 40 points. Jenny Rutherford was one point behind in second while Andra Barney secured third place with 37 on countback.

Bettie Morton overcame windy conditions to win the May Stableford with a score of 34.

Peggy Ferrett and Sally Tatton were second and third with scores of 31 and 30 respectively. Broome Park Golf Club Ladies played the final round of a 36-hole strokeplay competition on Saturday for one of their major trophies, the Nirvana Cup, donated by former lady captain Madhu Jain.
