Bashford a cut above with medal win

Mel Bashford reduced her handicap by two with a round of net 64 to win Whitstable and Seasalter’s Ladies’ Spring Meeting morning medal. Captain Maureen Davison was second with net 68, one better than Louise Tucker. Marie Hood won the best front nine prize (net 37) and Maz Garlinge (net 32) the back nine. Garlinge, Tucker and Helen Foad won the afternoon Texas Scramble with a ninehole score of 31.2, with Pat Bensted, Sheila Wyles and Sally Lawson second (31.8). Hood joined Foad and Garlinge to win another Scramble (65.9), ahead of Cath Whitehead, Sue Pout and Sharon Mills (67.7). Mia Waddingham made a winning start to her senior career with victory in the Medal Winners Cup, a competitio­n open to all monthly medal winners over the previous 12 months. Former junior Waddingham won on countback over the last six holes after she and Tucker tied on net 69 and also recorded same back-nine scores. Mel Bashford and John Wegner won the Bank Holiday Mixed Greensomes with 42 points. They finished one ahead of Mary King and Jack Dale, with Margaret Barker and president John Clarke (37) third. Twelve pairs competed with play on the front-nine hampered by heavy rain. Sue Pout and Dave Atkins were the best scorers (22), with Ann Milner and John Stokes (20) claiming the backnine honours. Fran Price and Joyce Jaynes (42) won the fourball betterball competitio­n, with Sue Pout and Jenny Vening second, ahead of Maz Garlinge and Helen Foad, (both 40) on countback. Three pars helped Sue Goodall make the most of pleasant conditions to win Division 1 of the monthly medal with a net 69. She finished four shots ahead of Penny Perkins and Jenny Vening. Jean Hudson beat Val Brown on countback in Division 2 after both carded net 72. Joyce Jaynes was third one shot behind. Holly Butler won the ninehole stableford, played at the same time with 17 points.
