Lord Mayor attends Recorder AGM
The Canterbury & District Recorder held its annual meeting on Saturday at the Age UK Canterbury in the presence of the Lord Mayor Cllr Rosemary Doyle, Judge Adele Williams DL and Geraldine Allinson, DL and chairman of KM Group , also Patron with David Eldridge, who is the son of the late founder Dennis Eldridge. Other guests included members of the committee, volunteers and listeners. The Recorder has provided a weekly digest of news, including from this paper, for the blind and partially sighted for more then 50 years. The Lord Mayor presented Stephen Thomas with a Long Service Certificate for services to the Canterbury & District Recorder over 10 years. Cllr Doyle spoke about her life before being selected as Lord Mayor, and particularly the honour she feels when attending functions of organisations who are run by volunteers and the work each person puts in, to help those who are less able to enjoy the news such as the Listeners. She also said how much she was looking forward to her year ahead as Lord Mayor and finished by thanking the volunteers. Judge Adele Williams thanked everyone for inviting her and she gave a real insight to what it’s like being a judge. She gave a fascinating insight into the various sessions she has to attend and act as judge, also revealing that in some cases a sense of humour is important, especially for the jurors. Geraldine Allinson, gave a taster of what’s to come later in the year as the Kentish Gazette celebrates 300 years of existence, from the very beginnings to date, and some of the families involved – which includes her own. The Canterbury & District Recorder is looking forward to being able to record some of those celebrations for listeners. The AGM ended with the chairman thanking everyone for coming and partaking of refreshments provided.
