Six-day feast of classical music

Classical music fans are in for a treat with the popular Stour Music Festival this month.

Several establishe­d groups and up-and-coming artists will perform at the classical concert which celebrates classical music from various eras.

This year’s festival welcomes The Tallis Scholars who will open the festival tomorrow (Friday) celebratin­g 16th century music.

The Kings Consort will feature large instrument­al forces when they play Bach’s Four Orchestral Suites.

Five groups of performers will be making their first appearance at Stour Music Festival. Harpsichor­dist Medea Bindewald will be playing on an original 1775 Kirkman instrument, and the programme will include works by Jacob Kirkman. The English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble will provide a colourful Venetian programme. Radio Antiqua, founded in The Hague in 2012, will perform Forgotten Treasures of the German Baroque. Courtiers of Grace’s The Lion and the Rose will depict the love story of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII, and young ensemble Amici Voices will play music from the time of Agincourt.

The festival was founded in 1962 by counter-tenor Alfred Deller and has been run by his son Mark since 1975. It will run from tomorrow to Sunday and from Friday, June 23 to Sunday, June 25.
