Yvonne’s multicolour bob raises £2,000 for charity

-

A former intensive care nurse has raised more than £2,300 for charity by dying her hair the colours of a rainbow.

Yvonne Mercer, of Mill Lane in Herne Bay, went to Blakes Hair and Beauty in Dover Street, Canterbury, on Friday to start the transformation.

The mother of two wanted red, yellow, pink, blue, purple, orange and green hair to support children’s charity Dandelion Times, which helps youngsters who have suffered abuse and neglect.

Mrs Mercer sat in the chair for five and a half hours while the salon staff worked their magic. The 45-year-old suffered abuse as a child, and said the charity was close to her heart.

“It’s made me who I am, and if I hadn’t gone through that it I wouldn’t be the person I am now,” she said.

“I wanted to turn my experiences into something positive. A rainbow is a sign of happiness – of hope and new beginnings, and it’s just the most perfect charity for me.

“It’s amazing what they do for those children, young people and their families. It’s phenomenal and this is why I’ve chosen Dandelions. They help hundreds of families per year all over Kent.

“This is about raising awareness.”

Yvonne also organised a charity event at the Activity Box in Herne Bay last month, for which businesses across the town donated prizes. More than £900 was raised.

She added: “I can’t thank all of the businesses enough they’ve been fantastic.”
