Choice of acting head confirms links between grammar schools

-

The Girls’ Langton in Canterbury has a new head of school to run its day-to-day affairs.

Executive head teacher Dr Matthew Baxter has appointed his assistant head teacher at the Boys’ Langton, Angela Scully, to the role.

The girls’ school underwent a period of tumult over 2015 and 2016 after it aborted an attempt to become an academy – provoking an official investigation and the departure of then head Jane Robinson.

Dr Baxter took over the run- ning of the Girls in April, when he announced he was committed to forging strong links between the two Langtons.

Mrs Scully’s appointment is temporary and will last, like Dr Baxter’s, until the end of the 2017-18 academic year.

“Parents who know of the boys’ school will be aware of Mrs Scully’s reputation,” Dr Baxter said.

“She expects and ensures very high standards from all students and members of staff, and has particularly strong interpersonal skills when working with students and parents.

“Mrs Scully will be an ideal addition to the staff of the girls’ school, and I am confident that she will ensure that the school’s reputation for the girls’ exceptionally high academic and per- sonal standards will quickly be restored.”

Mrs Scully is already working at the girls’ school, and takes up her post full-time in September.

In the spring of next year the governors of the Girls’ Langton will meet to decide the school’s direction.

Dr Baxter added: “Mrs Scully’s appointment to the post is a strong indication of the commitment of the governors and staff of the boys’ school to establish a successful and lasting partnership between the two schools.”
