No mention of white criminals

-

Recent news reports are showing a worrying trend of emphasising the race and country of origin of perpetrators of crimes when they are Muslim and Asian. BBC news reports emphasise the racial origins of criminals who exploited young girls while stating that the victims were “mainly white”. This is totally ignoring their nonwhite victims.

The emphasis on race and religious belief of criminals is an attempt to divide us and distract us from continued austerity and the devastation it is causing to the lives of ordinary people.

As we are aware, Extremist group Britain First are heading to Thanet to exploit the crime committed against a young girl in Ramsgate [Gazette, page 22]. It serves those who wish to divide us to emphasise the racial/religious origin of criminals when they are Muslim and/or Asian.

In contrast, no mention is made of the criminals’ origin when they are white. A crime is a crime and of course people who commit crimes, especially violent crimes against children and young people, should be punished.

The focus should be on supporting and protecting victims, not pointing out the race and religion of the perpetrators which fuels racism and division in our communities. Raushan Ara, Harbour Street, Ramsgate
