Church to host series of world-class music events
Music at St Peters has an impressive line-up for its new season of concerts – and has kept the subscription to £70 for eight world class events.
Performed at St Peter’s Church in Canterbury, the programme starts on Tuesday, September 16, with harpist Alex Rider and flautist Stina Wilson. Alex attended Christ Church University and Stina teaches there.
Pianist Alexander Panfilov will be the guest artist for October 21. He studied in Moscow and then won a scholarship to the Royal Northern College of Music, where he scooped its gold medal in 2014.
Subsequently, he won the Hastings International Piano Concerto competition and has given recitals at Carnegie Hall.
The Maggini Quartet are well established in Canterbury and return to St Peter’s on November 18 with a programme including works by Mozart, Schubert and Bax.
Described as “outstanding – technically brilliant and interpretatively virile”, Anna-liisa Bezrodny on violin will perform with pianist Diana Ketler on January 29.
Works will include Sonata for violin and piano by Janacek, and Prokofiev Sonata No 1 in F minor. Busch Piano Trio, an all solo international competition prize winners who have come together to share a passion for chamber music, perform on February 17. Their works will be by Smetana, Bridge and Schubert.
A dynamic young chamber ensemble called Aurora Trio, with a reputation for pushing the boundaries of its unusual instrumentation, will perform on flute, violin and harp.
This group won the Dorothy Parkinson Memorial Award for Young British Musicians at Harrogate International Festival 2016.
The concert on April 21 is by international harpsichordist Trevor Pinnock, with violinists Sophie Gent and Matthew Truscott, and viola player Jonathan Manson in a concert with works of the pre-classical era.
The final performance on May 19 will feature guitarist Morgan Szymanski.
In a homage to Segovia the recital will include works by composers from Back to Villa Lobos.
Tickets are available from Poppies Restaurant next to the church or from Ruth Paterson on masp1811@aol.com.
