Mixed Bay squads secure title treble

Herne Bay LTC competed in three mixed divisional finals after winning their respective leagues. The mixed 1st team travelled to Tunbridge Wells to take on their 2nd team in the Division 2 final. Peter Elsden/anne Gibbs stifled their opponents with solid net play and consistent returns, reeling off nine games on the trot to win 6-3, 6-0. Second pair Ben Keighley/ Debbie Holden won and lost a set 6-4 before being beaten in a championsh­ip tie-break. Elsden/gibbs followed up with a 6-3, 6-4 win and Keighley/holden played some excellent tennis against the 1st pair and won 6-4, 6-3 to complete a 3-1 win and claim the trophy for Bay. The mixed 2nds entertaine­d Tunbridge Wells 5ths in the Division 3 final. Father and daughter Graham and Danielle Miles had convincing wins against both Wells pairs, winning 6-2, 6-2, and 6-3, 6-0. Dan Walker/nicola Mileham won 6-1, 7-6 against the seconds and overcame the firsts 11-9 in a championsh­ip tie break to ensure a 4-0 win and the title. In the Division 6 final, Herne Bay 3rds faced Park Langley 2nds at home. Matt Newman/caroline Packer had a confident start beating the visitors’ 1st pair 6-2, 6-1 while Eddie Fisher/ Sue Toye had to dig deep to win a championsh­ip tiebreak to ensure a 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 win over a determined Park second pair. Fisher/toye then beat the visitors’ first pair 6-0, 6-4, to ensure the title while Newman/packer won 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 to complete another 4-0 win. The midweek ladies’ 1st team enjoyed a 3-1 win at Tunbridge Wells 1st in their final game in Division 1 to retain their league title. Anne Gibbs/caroline Packer lost 6-2, 6-, to the firsts but won 6-3, 6-0 against the seconds while Kay and Nicola Mileham won 6-3, 6-4 and 6-3, 6-3 to seal top-spot. In the East Kent League, Division 1, the men’s 1st team strengthen­ed their hold at the top with excellent wins away at Hythe and at home to Deal ITC. In Division 2, the men’s 2nd team produced a superb 4-0 win against Deal ITC 2nds. A much-changed team also took on Broadstair­s at home and came up short to lose out 3-1. In the East Kent Mixed Division 1, the 1sts won 4-0 at UK Paper and by the same score at home to Canterbury. Meanwhile, in the Dover & District League, the mixed B team won 5-3 at home against Bridge and 7-1 at home to Hythe B while the men’s B team won 8-0 at Hythe C.
