Canterbury Golf Club ladies battled strong winds as the September Stableford, Thirties Cup and nine-hole competitions took place on the same morning.

The Thirties Cup was donated by Mary Starbuck when she was lady captain in 1967. It is for players with handicaps of 30 and over and has been popular for beginners ever since.

This year’s winner was Elizabeth Carlotti, who, playing off a handicap of 32, scored 31 points.

The fast greens and gusting winds were a challenge on what was a relatively low scoring day for most.

Lizza Berry (h15) was the overall winner with 34 points. Two behind with 32 points was Joy Flynn (h19). Alyson Wreford (h22) topped Division 2 with 31 points with Angela Le Breton (h27) second.

Carlotti also won Division 3 with Jennifer Reed (h30) close behind with 29 points. The nine-hole winner was Kathleen Taylor with Zan Clifford second.

Results: Division 1: 1 Elizabeth Berry (h15) 34, 2 Joy Flynn (19) 32, 3 Alison Letts (20) 32, 4 Kim Atkinson (20) 32.

Division 2: 1 Alyson Wreford (22) 31, 2 Angela Le Breton (27) 28, 3 Sarah Wetherell (23) 28.

Division 3: 1 Elizabeth Carlotti (32) 31, 2 Jennifer Reed (30) 29, 3 Christine Bowles (33) 26.

Nine hole: 1 Kathleen Taylor (14) 31, 2 Zan Clifford (17) 27, 3 Sue Allan (14) 27.

Richard Wallis celebrated a hole-in-one as he finished fourth at the CK Group PGA Southern Professionals Championship at King’s Hill.

The Canterbury player, who leads the Virgin Atlantic PGA South Order of Merit, hit an ace at the 17th in his opening round of 68.

He followed that up with a second round 71 and saved his best play of the event for the front nine of his final round, where he birdied six holes to go out in an impressive 30 shots.

The event was won by Richings Park’s Chris Rodgers, who finished five clear strokes clear of Oxford Golf Centre’s Adam Wootton.
