League hopes take a knock
Southern Counties East
Whitstable will be looking to get their league campaign back on track this weekend.
They sit mid-table in the Southern Counties East, Premier Division, and host an unpredictable Bearsted side on Saturday.
Scott Porter’s Whitstable fell further behind the promotion race after a 3-1 defeat at Beckenham Town on Saturday, their third successive league loss.
The Oystermen had taken the lead midway through the first half, with a free-kick from Macauley Murray, but Beckenham responded almost immediately.
Jamie Humphris netted with a shot from outside the box and they almost added another when Carlos Branco rattled the woodwork with a free-kick.
The Beckenham keeper was rarely troubled in the second half and Whitstable were reduced to 10 men when Ricky Freeman was red-carded for an incident involving Hassan Oshilaja.
From that point on the hosts dominated, taking the lead with a second goal from Humphris before Richard Atkins made it 3-1 with a last-minute penalty after Craig Cloke had fouled him in the box.
Canterbury City are heading to fourth-placed Corinthian on Saturday with some good form behind them.
They beat an in-form Lordswood 1- 0 last Wednesday night and followed that up with a 3-3 draw at a resurgent Cray Valley on Saturday. It’s now four games unbeaten in all competitions.
At the Charles Ground, Deal in midweek, Matt Martin struck the winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time, inflicting a second league defeat over surprise-package Lordswood this season.
Dave Pilcher put Canterbury ahead on Saturday – his 50th for the club – but Cray’s experienced frontman Kevin Lisbie levelled the score with a header.
Cray’s star-man Lisbie, the former Leyton Orient striker, made it 2-1 but Canterbury had a hero of their own in Pilcher, who levelled it up again before the break.
Pilcher converted a 61st minute penalty to complete his hat-trick but it was all-square when Lisbie completed his own treble, despite appeals for offside. BOSTIK SOUTH
