A great pub – and vegan food

-

Landing on the moon, the electric car and the internet were once seen as sci-fi fantasy. Now Canterbury pub The Monument has marked a new milestone – the vegan kebab.

Regulars at the St Dunstan’s Street venue are waxing lyrical about the traditional ‘pub grub’ which packs a flavoursome punch but is meat and dairy free.

Their menu is a gamechanger, with vegans and omnivores uniting in their love of the vegan-only menu with the very best craft beers, ales and cocktails on offer too.

The traditional community pub is a vibrant and welcoming space that caters for all. Owners Tom Boughton and Jo Brookman are both vegans and say although the menu provides something different, their venue’s warm and friendly atmosphere sees many happy customers through the door.

Tom said: “We have an old regular that comes in for a takeaway and he’s a meat eater. People like the pub and they like the food.”

Delicious burgers and ‘tofish’ and chips are all readily available in an environment where the menu is recognisable to every customer who walks through the door.

While the pub is unique in being one of only three veganonly pubs in the UK, Tom is adamant the food speaks for itself. “Come and try the kebab,” he said. “It is one of our best sellers and it will blow your mind!”

Aside from all the trappings of a homely city pub, regulars will often suggest new ideas for the menu which Tom and the team are only too happy to indulge, with battered Oreos one happy experiment – with the menu expanding this month, there is no better time to visit your local for a good beer and delicious pub food.
