Fire destroys owner’s ‘pride and joy’ van

-

This is the moment a classic VW campervan went up in flames just outside Canterbury.

Fortunately, the owner escaped the burning vehicle but his pride and joy was destroyed by fire.

The dramatic picture was taken on Sunday by Barry Phelan as the campervan was pulled over at the side of the road near Harbledown.

The fire is thought to have started in the engine bay and quickly engulfed the vehicle before firefighters arrived to put it out.

Mr Phelan, a martial arts instructor, said: “I was out walking my dog when I saw it happen.

“The driver had pulled over and got out to call the fire service.

“I had a quick chat with him to make sure he was OK and that no one else was in the van.

“Obviously, he was a bit choked up because it was his pride and joy but at least no one was injured.”
