Debutant stars with four tries

-

There were four tries from debutant wingman Jack Colyer as Pilgrims romped to a comprehensive 50-14 victory away to Old Alleynians 2nds in Invicta Division 1. Also on the scoresheet were Harvey Young and Tyler Oliver, making a return from long term injuries, with fly-half Young slotting five conversions in addition to his second-half try. The city side built a 21-point lead by half-time through tries from Frankie Morgan, Oliver and a length of the field effort from Colyer. A solid front row platform of Jim Green, Cameron Townley and Louis ChapmanCoombes ensured there was plenty of possession to feed Canterbury’s expansive game and they went further ahead with tries from Kieran Thompson, before he was unluckily injured, and Young. Old Alleynians then found a reply with a converted try but they could not stem the Pilgrims flow. Colyer’s pace proved too much for the home defence as he ran in a secondhalf hat-trick, leaving the hosts with only another late, converted score as consolation. n A visit to Twickenham for the autumn internationals became a special day for a group of young adult carers in Kent, thanks to Canterbury Rugby Club and supporters. The carers, young people who look after, unpaid, a relative or friend, won four tickets to the England v Australia game in a charity ballot. Their support group contacted Canterbury’s head of rugby, Andy Pratt, to ask if the club had transport to the game. Andy then arranged with the club’s bus provider, Bayliss Executive Travel, to lay on a mini-bus for the group. At a first team pre-match lunch, supporters then dug deep and raised £500 to make it a special day out for the carers. Canterbury, Thanet and Dover Carers Support Group wrote: “We just want to say a huge thank you for your club’s generosity. Not only did we get to Twickenham and home comfortably and safely, we were able to buy the carers a rugby shirt they could wear on the day. They had food and also bought souvenirs. We got to meet two of the players postmatch and have selfies and autographs. Thank you for making this amazing day out even more special.”
