WOOLLCOTT WONDER STRIKE THE ICING ON THE CAKE, SAYS DELIGHTED BOSS SMITH

-

Manager Ben Smith said it was fitting that Adam Woollcott had such a big hand in City’s Vase win – but revealed that by rights the midfielder should not have taken the free-kick which led to the third goal. Kyron Lightfoot is City’s designated set-piece man, but he had been substituted by the time City were awarded the free-kick from which Woollcott put them 3-1 up against Newport Pagnell in the 83rd minute. Boss Smith explained: “It was a fantastic strike from Adam and I don’t think the video really does it justice, he got such a lot of whip and bend on the ball. “The funny thing is that Kyron would normally have taken the free-kick. He’s our designated set-piece taker so I’ll have a headache for the next game. “It was really fitting that Adam got what proved to be the winner though because he’s someone who has been at our club in the youth system. “When he got to men’s football the club were lower down the leagues and he was better than that so he had to move on but he’s one of our own so for him to get that goal was the icing on the cake on a special day.” Smith felt City deserved the win but admitted they did make heavy weather of the tie after leading 2-0 and 3-1. He added: “I was absolutely delighted to be 2-0 up at halftime . “I’d said to the boys not to get complacent or think we were already through so it was disappointing to let them back into the game. “At 2-1 we suddenly got very nervous but it’s something we’ll learn from.”
