Plan of action for path distorted by tree roots

-

Concerns have been raised about the relocation of bus stops as part of a scheme to make pavements broken up by tree roots safer.

The county council wants to carry out work in London Road where roots have warped footpaths, making them hazardous for wheelchairs users, mobility scooters and pedestrians with poor vision.

But some residents are con- cerned that moving the bus stops could cause traffic problems.

Kent County Council is consulting on the proposal for the stretch between Somner Close and Rheims Way, which it says it has a duty to ensure is safe.

It wants to preserve most of the trees, which are healthy and considered important to the street scene and environment. Engineers also fear removing them would be disruptive and could damage underground services.

Instead, they are proposing widening the footpath and extending the kerb in several areas. But one of the trees near Temple Road will have to be taken out because it cannot be by-passed.

The scheme also involves relocating two bus stops nearby and removing two parking spaces.

When the city council’s Can- terbury Forum discussed the proposal earlier this month, residents Brian Buggins and Jeremy Baker raised concerns the potential for traffic pinch points if the bus stops are moved.

If approved, work is expected to start later in February.
