Cracker Pulled: Conrad’s Christmas Cracker pulled in nearly 60 people for its quiz, postponed from December. Jan Knott had obviously committed much time and thought into preparing a set of cleverly constructed questions to test the brains of Bishopsbourne and beyond (even to Bridge and Kingston) with wife Sandy keeping tabs on the scoring. So intelligent were the quiz goers that at the end of the evening only 10 points separated the winners from the bottom team (whose identity is a closely guarded politically correct secret, so that no booby prize was presented). The clever clog winners were the talented team of Mark and Mary (Joplin and Starrs), which included Andy and Diane Cameron, Sally Crump, Valerie Caless, Les and Chris Harper and Angela Walker, each receiving a bottle of wine for their efforts. Jo Boraston’s runners-up team received a case of beer. The quiz raised £350 for hall funds but, more importantly, brought villagers together for a cheering mid-winter social event. Hall chairman Simon Pentecost thanked Jan and Sandy for their contribution and hoped that they would repeat their efforts next year. He also pointed out the event gave villagers the chance to see the improvements made to the hall with the aid of a £13,000 grant from Viridor that included more comfortable upholstered chairs and a draught-proof entrance lobby. Mermaid Treats: Eat at the Mermaid Inn during February and you could win a “surprize” packet containing vouchers for anything from a pint of beer to a main course to be used when you book a table in March.
