Please phone our parish council office on 01227 742700 for further information. Local History Group: At Herne & Broomfield Loal History Group’s last meeting Geoff Doel spoke about Charles Dickens and how Christmas celebrations especially food, figured largely in his writings. Geoff quoted various examples from, amongst others, Great Expectations and A Christmas Carol. In Great Expectations the Gargery family Christmas meal consisted of a leg of pickled pork and greens, and a pair of roast stuffed fowls - followed by brandy, a handsome mincepie and a Christmas pudding, which Pip had been allowed to stir. After Scrooge’s benevolent conversion in A Christmas Carol the climax of the Cratchit’s Christmas roast Goose dinner was the plum pudding described “like a speckled cannon-ball, blazing in half-a-quartern of ignited brandy and with Christmas holly stuck into the top.” These are just two examples of Dicken’s use of food used in his writings illustrating that he wanted to show readers in his lifetime that good food and nourishment were a human right, even for the poor. The next meeting of the Group is Tuesday February 5, 7.30pm entitled, ‘Let’s go to the Pictures’. Group member and dedicated film enthusiast Ken Finch will show a specially created film about local cinemas and the films they once featured. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month, 7.30pm, Herne Institute Hall, Canterbury Road, Herne, opposite Strode Park, CT6 7HE. Visitors are welcome, £2. For more information contact Chairman Alan Dilnot 01227 373695 or Secretary Sylvia Mckean 01227 281257. Hoath
Correspondent: Sue Nash, Greenacre Church Road, Hoath, Canterbury, CT3 4LA Tel: 01227 860291 sue@greenacrehoath.com Women’s Institute: Rosemary Crippin, President, welcomed members and a visitor to the January meeting and gave a special welcome to Susan Sparks, who joined as a new member. After presenting plants to this month’s ‘birthday girls’, Mesdames Corbin, Luck, Sinclair, Fullford and Jones, Rosemary introduced the speaker and fellow member Sue Nash. The talk was all about the history and skill of spinning wool and other fibres into yarn. Sue described how wool was once the major contributor to the economy of this country and then became very little sought after with the influx of cheaper materials for clothing. However, it is now seeing a revival with the popularity of using natural materials. Sue took up spinning as a hobby many years ago and finds it a relaxing pastime using natural fibres and she demonstrated that there are many ways of using a variety of fleeces. She passed around many samples of rare breed sheep’s wool, as well as silk, alpaca, cotton and many plant fibres. She was thanked by Pauline Louch. Film night will continue on the fourth Monday of every month commencing with Paddington 2, February 25, 7.30pm. Secretary, Wendy Dance, had received a letter to say that Hoath can send a delegate to the Annual meeting in Bournemouth. There were also letters of thanks from Catching Lives and Chislet Playgroup for the recent donations. There was an offer of seats on a coach for anyone attending the Council Meeting in March from Becket WI. Tracey reminded everyone that subs for 2019 are now due and she also outlined the budget for the year, which was approved by members. It is hoped that there will be a first aid course sometime in the coming year and a coach outing to the Criterion Theatre in Sheerness was proposed, as well as a trip on the Tenterden Railway with a cream tea. Mrs B’s Cup was won by Sue Clapson for her plate of biscuits. The next meeting will be Thursday February 21 when the speaker will be Melanie Gibson-barton on ‘Bruges is more than Just Chocolate’.

Correspondent: Patricia Hodges patriciahodges44@ btinternet.com Successful Charity Event: Letters of thanks have been received from the two charities supported with the proceeds from the Bridge and Scrabble Event in the village hall. Parkinson’s UK wrote an appreciative letter to thank Anne Burnett who sent the cheque and Sue Van de Vyver also received a grateful letter from Pancreatic Cancer Research. Many thanks, therefore, to everyone involved. Have Your Say: CCC have announced that dozens of roads could see new sets of single and double yellow lines, pavement parking bans and other parking restrictions under proposals out to public consultation on Thursday January 24. Each year, CCC receives requests for changes to parking from residents, councillors and organisations, which are considered as part of the Annual Parking Review. This review is one of the Council’s most important consultations of the year and affects a large number of roads in the district. Indeed, a proposed solution in one road may have a knock-on effect further down the road in the wider community. So take a look at the proposals before Friday February 15: visit https://news.canterbury.gov. uk/have-your-say-on-parkingchanges-3/, and make your views count.

Covet Lane will be closed in the general vicinity of the disused railway bridge, with local access from either direction up to where the road is closed, but no through access. The alternative route for all through traffic is via Black Robin Lane, Bonny Bush Hill, Frog Lane, Crows Camp Road, Pheasant Hall Road, Westwood Road and Turks Hill back to Covet Lane. There is a chance that the works may over-run for such reasons as adverse weather conditions or unforeseen engineering difficulties. Vegetable Growing: Barham and Kingston Horticultural Society are hosting a talk given by Jo Arnell about “Extra Productive Vegetable Growing”. The talk will take place, Barham village hall, Wednesday February 13, 7.30pm. Why not make this the year you try growing vegetables, even if it is only a few tomatoes on the patio?
