New double yellows to be painted
A raft of new parking restrictions are set to be imposed on Canterbury’s streets.
A total of 27 proposals will be put to councillors on Thursday, March 21, in an effort to ease congestion and free up spaces for residents.
Among the restrictions set to be given the green light are new double yellow lines prohibiting parking in Becket Mews, Cherry Garden Road, City View, Lady Wootton’s Green, St Michaels Road, St Peters Place and Oaten Hill Place.
A loading ban in Old Dover Road has also been recommended for approval, as well as a clampdown on pavement parking in King Street and St Alphege Lane.
Proposals to paint double yellow lines on Valley Road and to stop pavement parking on either side of the street have been dropped after the Canterbury Forum heard on Monday evening that a petition against restrictions has attracted more than 100 signatures.
It is feared the loss of spaces would make it difficult for elderly residents requiring constant visits from carers and ambulances, or who could be forced to park further away from their homes.
The council has also proposed raising on-street permit charges from £138 a year in the city centre zone to £145, from £83 to £86 in two-hour zones and from £60 to £63 in four-hour zones.
A final decision on which proposals to implement will be made at a Joint Transportation Board meeting later this month.
