10 charged over city attack

Ten teenagers have been charged in connection with a brutal attack which rocked the city and left a German student fighting for his life.

He had been in Canterbury on a graduation break when he was assaulted in Rose Lane on the evening of June 6.

Now, six months on, 10 teenagers have been charged following a lengthy police investigat­ion. The youngest of them is just 14. Detectives launched the probe after Daniel was airlifted to a London hospital, where he remained for several months and underwent major surgery.

He has since flown home to Mönchengla­dbach and is slowly recovering.

On Tuesday, police revealed 10 teenagers arrested in connection with the attack had been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, and violent disorder.

Because of their age, only one - George Potter, 18, of Eaton Place, in Margate - can legally be named.

Among the others are three 17-year-old boys from Canterbury, one of whom was also charged with theft of a screwdrive­r and a Stanley knife from a shop and possession of cannabis, and another charged with possession of cannabis. A 16-year-old girl from the city was also charged, as well as a boy of the same age who also faces charges of theft of a screwdrive­r and Stanley knife from a shop, in addition to possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

Two boys f r o m Orpi ngton, aged 16 and 17, were also charged, along with a 15-yearold boy from Birchingto­n, and a 14-year-old boy from Canterbury.

All 10 have been bailed to appear at Margate Magistrate­s’ Court on January 16.

A 44-year old man arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released without charge.
