Duff ends 29-penalty shoot-out epic

Herne Bay won a marathon penalty shoot-out against Eastbourne United 7-6 after a goalless draw in the South East Counties Women’s League Cup second round.

The Bay rode their luck through an astonishing 28 penalties before Abigail Duff secured their place in the quarter-finals with the winning penalty.

Herne Bay had beaten Eastbourne in the league by a comfortable margin earlier in the season, but found it difficult to break down the opposition’s packed defence. Lillian Tucker and Kate Foster both hit the crossbar in the 90 minutes, before Sophie Gifford thought she had won the game for Bay late on, only for her effort to be ruled out for an offside against Duff.

A lengthy penalty shoot-out then ensued, the first five penalties ending 4-4 before a series of saves and misses in sudden death gave Duff, who had missed her earlier penalty, the chance to win the game. Duff smashed home the winning penalty to give the Bay a quarterfinal tie with Mole Valley at Dorking Wanderers FC on Sunday, January 12.

Bay manager Howard Pearce said: “It was frustrating today, Eastbourne had a plan to defend in numbers and it worked well.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a penalty shoot-out like that before, it lasted as long as extra-time!”

Herne Bay: Connolly, Page, Phillips, Barton, Shipton, Foster, Pearce, Potter, Phillips, Gifford, Duff. Subs: Tucker, Reeves.
