Meadow trees must be uprooted

-

Environmentalists have had their wings clipped after planting dozens of new trees on the Wincheap water meadows - the controversial site of the council’s park and ride extension. It follows the planting of 39 willow trees by campaign groups which was stunted up with the help of their mascot, Ratty. But the authority says the location and layout of the trees is not best suited to benefit nature and wildlife. Now, after discussions between the two sides, they are due to be replanted at two differentsites.

“We completely understand the good intentions behind this,” said spokesman Rob Davies. “Unfortunately, they have been planted in such a way that they may be better re-sited to provide greater benefits for nature and wildlife. “Thirty-seven of the trees are being replanted at Bingley Island and the remaining two on the Kingsmead Field.”

The council has postponed its planning decision on the expanded Wincheap park and ride because of the overwhelming objections.
