Pupils at Joy Lane Primary School in Whitstable got a close-up look at a speedway bike.

Skipper Rob Ledwith and fellow rider Alex Spooner from Kent Speedway’s National League team were at the school to present pupils with the runners-up prize won in a naming competition.

The pupils from Joy Lane put forward Kingsmen as the new nickname for the team.

The team will be known as the Kent Royals, however, with Newington Primary School coming up with the winning name.

Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Faversham, came joint third along with Lower Halstow School for suggesting Cobras.

Joy Lane pupils were given the chance to see the riders in action, receiving complimentary tickets as the runners-up prize.

Kent Royals’ opening match is at Central Park on Easter Monday, April 13. They take on National League champions Leicester Lion Cubs. Eight schools took part with more than 60 different names suggested.
