Speeding drivers must be stopped
I would like to draw your attention to the dangerous behaviour of drivers on the A28 either travelling into Canterbury, but more particularly from the city towards Ashford.this road from Canterbury to Bretts Roundabout is a residential area and the speed limit is 30mph. The problem is that drivers in both directions exceed the speed limit, often excessively. While I am walking on the pavement I can only guess the speed the cars are being driven at. My estimate is that 60mph is very probable, especially south towards Ashford, but certainly cars coming north to Canterbury may well achieve this speed, but less frequently than those heading south.
The A28 carves a route through Thanington with one side linked to the estate, while the other side includes the resource centre and its play facilities for all ages of children and adults. Crossing this road is extremely dangerous due to the speed of drivers.
Ten days ago two police officers set up a check up for vehicles primarily heading south. Both officers were on foot, and no police car could be seen. They did stop a number of cars heading south but what action was taken is not known. Neither officer was seen with a vehicle speed assessment device.
One wonders why the police have not established a permanent presence to deter the speeding drivers and hopefully protect pedestrians crossing the road. Ideally, a permanent speed camera should be installed. Evidence of dangerous driving would be obtained and action can then be taken. Andy Robinson Grays Way, Canterbury
