Town lost their way

Whitstable Town

-

Whitstable had a nightmare second half on Saturday as they fell to a heavy home defeat.

Visitors VCD ended up winning the Isthmian League South East contest 4-1.

Things had been looking good at the Belmont, in Town’s first home league outing, when marksman Aaron Millbank - back available after missing the opening two games - headed them infront just after the half-hour mark. Only the woodwork denied Liam Gillies from firing home a second. VCD had missed some good chances of their own in the opening half, however, and they found their range after the restart.

A quickfire double from Ashley Proberts and Chris Edwards put VCD ahead and former Oysterman Marcus Elliott added a third midway through the half. Paul Vines, who had already seen a goal ruled out for offside, tapped home a fourth with 15 minutes left. The Oystermen have lost their first three games of the season, including two in the league, and return to action on Saturday with a trip to Haywards Heath, a team who are also looking for their first win of 2020/21.

There was a minute’s applause before Saturday’s game in memory of club stalwart George Corney, recognising the contribution he made to the club over the years. His family were at the Belmont.

The club said: “He will always be remembered for his support of Whitstable Town and especially the youth teams. We are certainly going to miss all the stories and hot gossip that George was famous for!”

He played a key role in helping to form the Kent Youth League in the mid-1980s and provided valuable support for ex-chairman Joe Brownett at the club.
