Liam Kirkham was crowned Canterbury men’s champion of champions after winning the Powers Cup by five shots on Sunday.

In a field containing 15 of last year’s trophy winners, he shot a five over par gross 66, net 71, to win comfortably from second placed Martin Towns. Graham Vaughan took third place on countback ahead of Josh Bristow and fifth placed Paul Davis. Kirkham said: “You don’t shy away from winning any competition and I know this one has a small field but it’s all the winners from last year, so it’s a good one to win.”

It could have been a double celebration as he and Ben Dancer finished just half a shot behind winners Paul Rich and Jim Holliday in Saturday’s Browning Cup foursomes. Ed Kedge became the 13th first time Canterbury men’s winner since the end of the lockdown when he scored 39 points to win last Wednesday’s men’s stableford in a field of 69. Kedge beat his previous best stableford total by two to win by a point from Aston Moy. Steve Girdwood took third place on countback with 37 points, ahead of Chris Catford.

Kedge said: “I don’t get the chance to play in many competitions and when I do play I usually I crumble so I’m chuffed, it was nice to put it all together for once.” Canterbury teaching pro Richard Wallis struggled on the saturated par 72 Trentham GC lay out, at Stoke on Trent, to finish two under par in the PGA Professional Championship event for club professionals and tied for 26th place. David Tingey scored plus two to win Monday’s Seniors Gibson Cup bogey competition, on countback ahead of David Divers. Hugh Buron was third. Judith Jefferson and Dorothy Lloyd-hughes were the only players with a net score in the 70s to win Sunday’s Ladies’ foursomes Tchitcherine Salver by seven strokes.

That made it a win double in five days for Dorothy, who won Sarah Wetherell’s Lady Captain’s Prize on Wednesday. Marianne Disneur and Ann Lake were second, half a stroke ahead of third placed Val Binns and Jacqui Mount, whose 93 was the best gross score of the day.
