Kent Women hungry for more silverware

Cricket Bowler joins for T20

-

Kent Women were presented with the South East T20 trophy at the weekend and they are hungry for more. The Horses were hoping to face Sussex Women in a double header at The Mote, Maidstone on Sunday but the wet weather meant play was cancelled. The title had been wrapped up the previous weekend with a double-header win in Essex.

Kent Women’s head coach Dave Hathrill was delighted to have landed one piece of silverware and is now eyeing another.

He said: ”I’m proud of the way that this team has all worked together to bring about such positive results.

“Every player has contributed towards this group win and as a coach, you can’t ask for much more. The brand of cricket this team has played has been really good and I’ve been impressed by everyone. “We’ve had experienced internationals working wonders alongside homegrown talent during this tournament and that’s something I know our supporters are particularly encouraged by.

“The hard work does not stop here, however. We’re always hungry for silverware and the Women’s London Championship is now our top priority.”

Kent return to 50-over cricket in the London Championship on Tuesday, June 1 against Sussex Women, at the Nevill Ground, Tunbridge Wells. Grace Scrivens, 17, finished as the South East Group’s top run-scorer in the T20 competition with 191 runs in six matches.

Kent have signed Afghanistan International spinner Qais Ahmad.

The 20-year-old has joined the county for their Vitality Blast campaign and two County Championship matches, subject to regulatory approval. Ahmad has has already featured in several major competitions including Australia’s Big Bash League. In T20 outings to date he has claimed 77 wickets in 67 matches and he can bat too with a strike-rate of 126.46. He made his Test debut against Bangladesh in September 2019 “I have heard good things about Kent and I will give it my all,” he said.

Kent director of cricket Paul Downton said: “We’re delighted to welcome a legspinner of Qais Ahmad’s class to Kent as we look to bring some variety to our attack ahead of the Vitality Blast. “Qais Ahmad is an exciting talent who has shown his ability in top quality leagues all over the world. I am confident that his enthusiasm for the game will make him a firm favourite with our members and supporters as we look to welcome crowds back to watching live cricket again.” Kent take on Glamorgan in the County Championship at the Spitfire Ground from Thursday and will be hoping the return of fans helps to improve their form.

They are still awaiting a first win since returning to competitive action after rain washed out much of last week’s draw with Sussex. Up to 950 fans are expected to be watching at Canterbury each day for the scheduled four-day match, but it’s a members-only ballot for now.

n11, had recently won their first Juniors’ competitions while elder sister Claudia, 14, captained her sisters and 11-year-old Elsie Miller to victory in the club’s May Bank Holiday Monday Texas Scramble.

She said: “I was under a lot of pressure as my girls told me I had a Carlotti winning streak to carry on.”

She beat Alison Kingston by one shot. Heather Hardy came third with a net 70.

June Bevan continued her winning streak by shooting a gross 95, net 67 to win the Ladies Challenge Bowl on Friday. Christine Bowles came second with a net 69 and Heather Hardy shot a net 71, taking third place on count back from Val Binns. Binns then made eight pars in a gross 86, net 75, to win the Ladies Weekend May Medal on count back from Diane Hollidge on Saturday.
