Smith does his level best

-

Terry Smith equalled his best score at Canterbury Golf Club, a gross net 83, net 64, to win the seniors’ captain’s prize on Monday.

Terry was out in three over par gross for 24 Stableford points and scored another 19 on the back nine, including a four points birdie at the 13th, for a total of 43 to win from a field of 79 by three. Richard Jaworski (21) scored 40 points, despite a no return at the sixth, to take second on countback from Ken West (18).

Terry said: “My driving was very good but my approach shots were the thing, I landed a six iron second shot just short of the green on the 13th and it rolled up to six feet.

“It’s my first year in the seniors, so it felt really good to win one. I was delighted.”

Chris Catford (7) scored his best medal round at Canterbury with a three over par gross 74, net 67, to win last Wednesday’s men’s midweek medal by a shot from 14-year-old Amos Brazier.

Mick Scott (13) scored a hole in one on the fifth in a gross 82, net 69, for third from a field of 38.

Scott’s ace was his sixth in all, with five at Canterbury, and he said: “I’d rather it had been on the 17th to get a full house, because I’ve had one at all the other par threes at Canterbury and two now on the fifth.”

Catford was level par for the front nine with a birdie at the seventh and a bogey at the eighth, and was only three over on the back nine with bogeys at the 14th, 15th and 16th. He flirted with the European Tour in his youth and owns Hersdenbased Gokart, who manufacture electric golf trollies.

He said: “In those days, the European Tour was much smaller and much easier for kids with stars in their eyes to have a go at.

“If you could get a Tour Card and you were any good you could do well. I was probably the worst Tour Pro they’ve ever had, I didn’t win a penny. It’s all right, I got it out of my system.”

Canterbury top Division 2 of the East Kent Evening League after a 4-0 whitewash of Littlestone Warren on Friday.

New squad members Paul Blake and Mick Scott won 3&1 before Mark Lambton and Nigel Fluet cruised home 5&4.

Claire Wilson was so buoyed up by winning the Ladies’ August medal that she won Wednesday’s Ladies’ September medal for good measure.

Wilson (20) recovered from dropping five shots on the first two holes to score a gross 91, net 71 and win on countback from Val Lucas (25), who had birdies at the fifth and 17th in a gross 96.

Caroline Collins (9) scored nine pars, eight bogeys and a double for a gross 81, net 72, to take third place on countback from Barbara Plews (26) in a field of 16.

The St Stephen’s Golf Society took on the Chestfield Golf Course last Friday and there was a win for new member John Knight with 44 points. Nigel Stevenson was a close second

with 42 points and a chirpy Mick Bevan let everyone know about his third place 40 points.

In the KO Cup, Alan Mountain, Alix Mitchell, Bob Mcdougall and Pete Kenehan made the next round. Ian Jackson made it a hat-trick of nearest-the-pin spot prizes with Mitchell and Andy Oxberry taking the other prizes available. The Wooden Spoon went to Gareth Venables.
