BOWLS: IT’S 10 FINALS DAY TITLES FOR CORNFOOT - 30 YEARS AFTER HIS FIRST SUCCESS

Canterbury held their finals day at the weekend as Alan Cornfoot won a landmark title. Cornfoot defeated Chris Dawson, claiming his 10th title - 30 years after his first success. Chrissie Barr, who had earlier in the week sealed the ladies’ handicap title, started a busy day for her by winning the 2 wood ladies’ pairs with Maragaret Nevell, defeating Wendy Wright and Maureen Dilnot. She made it a hat-trick of titles when she defeated Yvonne Gambrill in the ladies’ 2 wood singles final. Andy Ferguson picked up his maiden title alongside Pete Foster, beating Andy Burton and Alan Cornfoot in the Men’s 2 wood drawn pairs. Sue Mates and Joe Vandepeer denied June Mitchell and Malcolm Nicholson from retaining their mixed pairs title.

Dave Todd beat Mike Talbot in the over-65 singles final, while ladies’ captain Alison Macdonald was victorious in the Ladies’ Challenge Cup final against Jean Carter.

Dean Ellis ended his wait for a first club singles title with a victory against Ferguson in the Court Cup final. Steve Wells overcame a sixshot handicap deficit to beat Michael Hutchison in the men’s handicap competitio­n. It was a case of third time lucky for Chris Dawson as

he defeated Dean Ellis in the men’s 2 wood singles final. Barr was denied a fourth title as she fell short in the Ladies’ Championsh­ip, Leah Bamford picking up her first club title. Canterbury Ladies finished off their Dover League campaign in emphatic style, defeating Deal 54-16 across two triples,

for an overall 6-0 victory. This maintained their 100% record with eight wins from eight. The squad was made up of Barr, Mandy Catt, Sue Close, Yvonne Gambrill, Liz Long, Maddie Mcconomy and Sue Mates.

On Sunday, September 12, six mixed triples from Whitstable played six from Dane Park, with Whitstable losing 105-95.

With the season winding down, Herne Bay only played two matches during the week. The men’s team were beaten in a home game with Maidstone, rink honours were even, but the visitors won overall.
