Kingston calls the shots with 11th win

-

Alison Kingston was crowned Canterbury Ladies’ club champion for the 11th time in 12 years when she scored a gross 78 in the second round to win the scratch Sillars Bowl by seven shots. Jacqueline Mount won the Jubilee Cup for the best net 36 holes score and Ann Lake claimed the Jubilee Year Trophy for the best net single round, with a 70.

Club president Kingston finished ahead of Ali Ord who took second on countback from Mount.

Mount’s net total of 145 gave her victory in the Jubilee Cup. Kingston said: ‘”I’m delighted to have regained the Ladies’ club championship. I scrambled the front nine and, apart from a careless five on the fifth, I managed to par all the rest.

‘’The back nine was marred only by silly mistakes on 13 and 18, but I got away with it.” Canterbury members, Kent captain Angela Jones and Kingston, helped Kent senior women’s side crush Essex 5.5-0.5 at Scotland Hills to win the Mulligan Larsen Bowl awarded to the South-eastern Counties league champions of Essex, Kent, Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex - for the first time. Canterbury’s East Kent Evening League side drew 2-2 at Littlestone Warren to set up a Division 2 title-decider at second-placed Tenterden side, London Beach, on October 1. Canterbury need only one point for the title. At Littlestone Warren, Marthinus Bonthuys and Chris Brown lost 4&3 before Sam Plews and Richard Scott won 4&3 to level the match. Canterbury’s Mick Scott and Colin Shaxted secured a 2&1 win, however Matt Admans and Chris Stephens were beaten 4&3 in the final match. Canterbury’s Richard Wallis took third in the Copthorne Pro-am, near Crawley, on Friday, scoring seven birdies. Mick Provan was thanking a hefty slice of luck at the 17th for saving his best-ever round at Canterbury as he scored a net 64 to win the Seniors’ Newing Bowl.

Provan shot his lowest total at Scotland Hills to win by two shots from Tim Brett. David Piper holed a fivefoot putt on the 18th green to win his first Canterbury silverware, the Adsett Salver on countback from Colin Shaxted.

Former England and Kent Ladies’ wicket-keeper June Edney won the Ladies’ Weekend September Stableford competition. Club captain Paul Redfearn’s side took full revenge for a 4-2 defeat at Walmer & Kingsdown by thumping the Deal side 6-0 in the return friendly.

Celts’ skipper Mike Cunningham’s side tied 8-8 with Redfearn’s English team in Canterbury’s annual Celts versus English match on Sunday.
