It’s shaping up to be another weird Christmas

- John Nurden The KM Group columnist with his own look at the world By John Nurden jnurden@thekmgroup.co.uk

This is going to be a weird Christmas and probably even weirder than last year’s, if that is possible. As the latest Covid variant goes on the rampage, we are already seeing the end of civilisation as we know it. Hospital staff are going off sick and so are lorry drivers.

It’s going to be 2020 all over again and that was unfathomably bad.

I can’t quite remember why, or what tier we were in, but I know our eldest son and his fiancée couldn’t spend Christmas dinner with us as planned because of the myriad new regulations.

Instead, we forlornly waved to each other in the back garden as a turkey gently browned in the oven.

Everything just seemed so unfair last year.

I’m normally a fairly optimistic chap but this relentless coronavirus attack is really getting me down.

At least, touch wood, we have been lucky not to have lost any immediate family unlike many of our friends.

I am, however, taking solace in festive tunes.

I know they are not everyone’s cup of tea but I can never get enough of the rockier versions, like Slade’s

Merry Xmas Everybody and Shaky’s Merry

Christmas Everyone.

Perhaps it’s the former DJ in me?

On reflection, I’m glad I’ve hung up my headphones.

Those still spinning the discs, or dancing to downloads, have had a tough year, too, with punters unable to decide whether to risk a night out on the tiles, take part in an office quiz or stay at home with the cat.

Still, we always have the year 2022 to look forward to.

Perhaps we need a theme tune? Labour famously adopted Things Can Only Get Better.

I suspect Boris will opt for The Pogues’ Fairytale of New York.

And we all know how that ended up. Happy Christmas.
