Disneur calls shots again

-

Bernard Disneur wrapped up his second festive season victory in three days by scoring 35 Stableford points in Canterbury Golf Club’s shotgun start Sutton Cup on Saturday.

Disneur started at the 18th and was six over par for his first 10 holes for 24 points, adding 11 on his last seven. The 12th was shut for safety reasons.

He won by a point from Peter Johnson, who began on the first and had a second-hole birdie in a front nine two over par 38 for 20 points but was restricted to 14 on the back, despite covering the last five holes in one over par.

Derek Horne scored 33 points to take third place on countback from Jamie Bourne, Bert Whyte and Liam Holland. There was a starting field of 66.

Disneur said: ‘’It was cold, unpleasant and muddy but I had a fantastic front nine and it’s lovely to win again.” But he admitted thinking: “I’ve just lost the plot” after double bogeys on three of his final five holes.

Disneur, Dave Brindle, Peter Cheney and Ian Cooper decorated their card with three pointers to win the members’ team first prize in last Thursday’s Christmas Open.

With two scores to count from four, they scored 76 points to win a Lynx golf bag each and bottles of wine, winning by two points from Canterbury’s second team of Bruce Maguire, Andy Fearn, David Spencer and Ian Florence over the 17 open holes.

Chestfield Golf Club’s Ollie Youll, Jim Mcdonald, Trevor Friend and Malcom Aspell scored 81 points as first-placed visiting team, winning golf clubs and bottles of wine.

Catherine Hinds and Brian Gaston racked up 32 Stableford points to win Canterbury’s 17 holes Mixed Foursomes Turkey Trot on Sunday.

Val Lucas and Richard Hinds were a point back to take second place on countback from Pauline Nicholls and Andy Fearn and fourth-placed Diane Hollidge and Antonio Rubbo, in a field of 10 pairs.

Lucas and Sarah Wetherell had the ghost of Christmas present with them as they scored 58 Stableford points from 15 open holes to win last Wednesday’s Ladies’ Fun team competition.

With two out of three scores to count, any teams short of a player could use a ghost substitute, which scored one point on the odd numbered holes and two on the evens, if either player failed to match its score.

But Lucas and Wetherell’s phantom made its presence felt on only four holes as they scored 36 points on the front nine and 22 on the back six to win by two points from Barbara Plews, Charlotte Launois and their spectral sub.

Ali Doyle, Fran Fearn and Jen Rutherford needed no supernatural help to score 55 points for third place in a field of six teams, 15 humans and three spooks.

Terry Hancock won Monday’s final seniors Stableford of the year. With the slippery 11-13 loop closed for safety concerns, Hancock scored 35 points to win by four from second-placed Michael Parrott. John Mcneill scored 30 points for third overall in a field of 56.

Hancock said: “I’m absolutely delighted, It wasn’t cold but it was heavy going.

“Muddy conditions and not very favourable to anybody but somehow or other it worked.”

Long-serving ground staff members Keith Kemp and Simon Bacon were honoured at a club breakfast on Monday to mark their years of service. Kemp has been tending the course for 40 years, Bacon for 25.

Both were thanked for their service and given vouchers at a ceremony attended by club president Ali Kingston and club vice-captain Scott Lindsay.

Juniors’ organiser Elizabeth Carlotti and the juniors themselves were highly praised by club captain Paul Redfearn at their annual trophy prize-giving and Christmas tea on Sunday.

Redfearn said: “I would like to say how proud I am of all the junior members for the way they have represented and been a such an asset to our club.

“And my thanks particularly to Elizabeth Carlotti for all the work and effort she has put in during the last year to build up the junior membership and our teams.”

The prize-giving followed an 11 holes blue tees fun competition, which was won by Max Smith with 31 Stableford points.
