Late heroics before season comes to end

- Bypaulmercer

There has been a flurry of activity at the Canterbury and District Angling Association’s waters with less than a week left of the coarse fishing season.

This, particularly, has been the case at waters which will close for three months soon.

At Stour Lake in Fordwich, Karl White tackled up with boilie baits at short range to successfully catch a 19lb mirror carp. Meanwhile, pike anglers have caught fish in Stour, Trenley and Fordwich Lakes while spinning.

The River Stour remains fishy, with coarse and predator anglers amongst the fish. Ernie Millard and Graham Marshall opted to fish from a boat, armed with a float and a quiver tip, to catch 25 decent bream and numerous other silver fish at Grove Ferry. Father-and-son duo Jon and Henry Weir pike-fished the river with ledgered dead-baits to great success.

Junior Henry landed a 9lb 8oz pike, while Jon caught five more, including fish of 18lb and 17lb.

Away from the Fordwich Lakes and the river which will all close mid-march, other CDAA waters which will remain open are fishing well.

Stonar Lake at Sandwich has been busier than of late, with Mike Chandler setting the pace with three carp, including a 14lb common.

The Association manages three lakes at Littlebourne and it was at Birch Lake where Jon Glaiser offered sweetcorn baits close in to catch three tench to 5lb and a brace of carp to 12lb.

The last competition of this season will be held on Sunday for the Bateman Cup.
