Newell does trick in win

A hat-trick from player-ofthe-match Thomas Newell helped Canterbury men’s Friars to a 5-2 success over New Beccehamia­n 3rds in South East Division 8 Invicta on Saturday.

John Aikin got the other two goals before he decided to marshal the Friars defence, which included Samuel Schuuring and Hugo Fassam. Michael Sabine struck for Canterbury Pilgrims in their 8-1 loss to Holcombe 2nds, with Josh Kitson being named their player-of-thematch in the SE Premier Division.

The ladies’ 2nds, bottom of the table, lost 6-2 away to Ipswich 1sts in National Hockey League Conference East.

Tilly Tillings and player-ofthe-match Flora Brett fired home for Canterbury.

The ladies’ 4ths lost 2-1 to Holcombe 4ths in SE Invicta Division 2, despite Hannah White’s effort.

In SE Invicta Division 3, Kate Hooker netted in a 1-1 draw with New Beccehamia­n 2nds. Halfway through the first half, after Canterbury gave away a short corner, New Beccs scored. Canterbury went into the second period still positive, forcing New Beccs to clear it off the line, while Suzie Mccully hit the post.

But with around 10 minutes to go, Hooker took the ball to the edge of the D and hammered it through the legs of their keeper. Hooker shared the player-ofthe-match award with Lou Coppin. Canterbury Junior Hockey Club hosted the Kent Hockey Associatio­n under-12s Kent County Championsh­ips at the weekend.

Overall, more than 40 teams attended.

Alastair Brogdon, a member of GB men’s hockey team at the 2016 Rio Olympics, presented the medals. Marden won Kent Championsh­ip Boys’ gold, while Tunbridge Wells took silver and Sevenoaks claimed the bronze.

In the boys’ developmen­t tournament, Canterbury Green took gold, silver went to Canterbury White and bronze went to Canterbury Lions.

Sevenoaks claimed gold in the Kent Championsh­ip girls’ category, silver went to Knole Park and Tunbridge Wells took the bronze. Canterbury Green won the developmen­t tournament girls’ gold. Sevenoaks took silver, with bronze going to Tunbridge Wells.
