More traffic misery expected on roads for Easter getaway

-

Motorists using Brenley Corner roundabout near Faversham should be braced for big holdups this Easter weekend.

Highways bosses are expecting the troubles on Kent’s roads to worsen as people try to get away for the bank holiday.

Brenley Corner will remain reduced to one lane for this weekend and the remainder of April as it continues to be used as a stopping point by police for lorries trying to get onto the A2.

District residents using the A2, M2 and Thanet Way on the approach to the notorious junction have suffered severe delays over the past few weeks due to the knock-on impact of Operation Brock.

Taking to Twitter, Richard Cooke said: “How long do the ridiculous delays at Brenley Corner have to continue? Completely mad and irritating. Pull lorries into a dedicated area at Medway Services and process them there. Present situation is insufferable and unnecessary.”

And now, Kent Highways is anticipating heavier traffic this weekend.

Motorists are looking forward to the restrictions easing at the end of April, yet further disruption will immediately follow due to separate repair works on the

M2.

The 12-mile stretch between Junction 5 for Sittingbourne and Junction 7 at Brenley Corner will be shut across six weekends in May and July.

May 6 will mark the first of three consecutive weekend closures, which will run from 8pm on Friday until 6am the following Monday.

Contractors will then return in July for another three weekends, starting from Friday, July 1.

The motorway will be closed in both directions while bridge repairs are carried out.

Drivers will be diverted via the A2, A20, M20 and A249.
