We’re playing for our fans

Lewis Chambers says Faversham’s players will be out to give their supporters something to shout about in their final three matches. The Lilywhites sit 13th in Isthmian South East and appear to have little left to play for.

A 1-1 home draw against leaders Hastings leaves them seven points clear of the bottom three but, realistically, only able to climb up one position before the end of their campaign.

Town watched Hastings celebrate at Salters Lane last weekend, as they claimed the point they required to be crowned champions.

But versatile midfielder Chambers reckons Town’s players will be out to put on performances for the club’s fans when they visit Whitstable this Saturday (kick-off 1pm) and host second-placed Ashford on Easter Monday (kick-off 3pm). “The fans have been immense all-year round,” he said. “Even a crowd came down to Whitehawk on a Tuesday night. They came a long way. “We will try to finish the season strongly for them. Hopefully we can give them something to cheer about.” Town started 2022 with a New Year’s Day 2-2 draw at Ashford and Chambers recalled: “The Ashford game at their ground, that was a good game. We all enjoyed it, so we’ll try and get a result against them again on Monday. “Whitstable is a massive game, they are fighting for survival. But we are, obviously, there to get a result ourselves and carry some momentum into next season.”

Striker Marcus Elliott had given Faversham the lead against Hastings before midfielder Sam Hasler scored from a free-kick right before half-time to help earn the East Sussex side the point they needed. “Obviously, they came there only needing a point but we played really well and went 1-0 up,” said Chambers, whose long throw is a big weapon for the Lilywhites.

“I thought it was a bit of a soft free-kick for their goal, but it’s a good finish from their lad. “After that went in, it was quite an even game, but it was enjoyable to play in.

“It wasn’t nice to see (Hastings’ title celebrations at Salters Lane after the match) but fair play to them. They were the most consistent side over the season.”
