Coupe’s par excellence!

-

John Coupe scored level par 71, net 69, for victory in Canterbury Golf Club’s men’s Lefevre Cup from a field of 71 on Sunday.

Coupe was one of only three players to beat net par as he held off David Simmons for victory on countback. Graham Hunter scored gross 92, net 70 for third.

“It was a challenge,” said Coupe. “It was windy, the course is bouncy and both of those made it very difficult.

“On the fifth, I hit a 6 iron just to the back of the green and chipped in, the ninth I was on the green in two and two-putted, the 11th was a 6 iron to about a foot and, at the 12th, I hit a 9 iron to about 15 foot and holed the putt.”

Canterbury knocked down Hever Castle 3.5 to 1.5 on Saturday in their second Invicta League match of the season.

Mark Lambton and Wal Kalinowski won 3&2, Chris Sherwood and Connor Bundock won 5&4, team captain Brandon Ware and Paul Davis won 4&3, Jamie Bourne and Andrew Brockman halved and Steve Eeles and Sandro Carlotti lost 1 down.

Wayne Catherall birdied the 18th to get 40 points and snatch victory by one from Robert Green in last Wednesday’s men’s Midweek Stableford.

Catherall racked up 29 points from the first 12 holes but an unlucky 13th and a bogey at the 14th and a double at the 17th could have seen him miss out before he got a lucky bounce for birdie at the 18th for victory in a field of 75.

Catherall said: “My second shot 4 iron went left behind the trees near the green and I had a bit of a lucky break.

“I tried to chip it low but it went a bit high, clipped one of the branches, hit the side of the bunker, rolled round and finished alongside the hole!”

Liam Holland took third place on countback from Richard Hinds after a one-over-par final 12 holes.

Canterbury made a strong start to their ladies’ scratch Bradley Cook campaign when Ali Ord’s side won their opening home round-robin group fixtures against Sevenoaks club Wildernesse 5-0 on Friday and 3-2 against Nizels GC on Saturday.

Wilson had a five-points birdie at the fourth as she scored 21 points on the front nine, adding five pars, three bogeys and a two-point double at the 12th for 24 more points and her fourth victory this month.

Sarah Venturi scored 37 points for second place, with Catherine Hinds third on countback from Diane Plommer.

Wilson said: “It’s my best competition round and I’m delighted, I’ve never played like that before - everything went right.”

victory of the year when she scored 38 Stableford points to win the ladies’ Mccormick Trophy by four. Joy Flynn (25) was second with 34 points.
