Scorer’s golden eagle!

-

Jason Scorer chipped in for an eagle as he and Dean Petch snatched victory by one shot from Pete Johnson and John Shiel in Sunday’s greensomes Bill Cryer Trophy at Canterbury Golf Club.

Starting at the 10th, Scorer and Petch were only three-over-par before running up a double bogey seven at the 18th but they bounced straight back with the eagle three at the first.

They dropped only three more shots in a gross 77, net 65, to squeeze out Johnson and Shiel who birdied the first, third and fifth in a two-over-par gross total of 73, net 66.

Alan Bundock and Anthony Grove had three birdies, nine pars, five bogeys and one damaging double at the 17th in a gross 75, net 67, to take third position from a field of 38 pairs.

Scorer said: “The eagle at the first definitely won it for us. We were a bit deflated on the first tee after the 18th, so getting an eagle down there was a big turning point.

“We took my drive and Dean hit a cracking 3 wood just to the right of the green and about 20 yards short.

“He said ‘You need to land this

just on the back of the bunker, just let it run down to the flag’ and I did, so a big cheer went up when we saw that drop.

“It was brilliant to win, we were elated.”

Canterbury’s Bradley Cook and his team did their homework and were rewarded with a 5-0 win at Cherry Lodge on Friday in their third round-robin group match.

England and Kent Ladies’ Seniors captain Angela Jones, Jen Rutherford and Fiona Cameron played the Biggin Hill course on Monday and Canterbury captain Ali Ord said: “Their

Aston Moy, Paul Davis, Connor Bundock and Ken Small scored 90 points for third.

Stephens said: “Simon’s eagle putt just lipped out at the first but Pat dropped a putt from 12 feet for a birdie at the sixth and, on the 14th, his second shot was to about a foot.

“The highlight was our last hole, the 15th, we got three pars for three pointers on that one, it was brilliant.”

Paul Jefferson chipped in for a birdie at the 12th to help rack up 40 points and victory by two from Steve Robson and Matt Admans in last Thursday’s Club Midweek Stableford.

Jefferson said: “It feels amazing, I think I won something years and years ago, but I haven’t won anything since.”

He put that right from a field of 31 with his best competition score since 2015, a gross 80, net 67, scoring 19 points out and 21 on the back nine with his birdie, three pars and five bogeys.
