Duo’s landmark victories

Mark Broadhurst and Wal Kalinowski achieved career milestones, carding winning rounds in Canterbury’s Henry Knight Salver and Brook Rose Bowl gross and net competitions on Sunday.

Broadhurst scored his lowest competition round, a four-birdie one-over-par 72, to win his first scratch trophy at Canterbury by two shots in the Salver.

Kailnowski shaved two shots off his best gross score with a three-birdie 74, net 65, to win his maiden trophy by three shots in the net competition Bowl.

He also took second in the Salver, holding off third-placed Sean Pilbeam in a field of 78.

Broadhurst had birdies at the fifth, sixth and eighth holes in a level-par outward 36 and a further birdie at the 13th, six pars and two bogeys brought him home in style. He said: “To win a scratch competition at Canterbury is a special feeling, I’ve never won one before.

“All I wanted to do was to shoot my handicap and I did that plus - I’m really, really happy.”

Kalinowski had birdies at the first, third and eighth holes in a level-par front-nine 36 and dropped only three shots on the back nine to win by three from second-placed Mark Burns, who held off third-placed Dean Petch on countback.

Kalinowski said: “I’m absolutely delighted.

“I always wanted to win a competition here and today is the day. My goal for this year was to break my gross course record, which was 76, and I’ve done it with 74.

“I started well with a birdie at the first but the shot of the day for me was my second at the third. I put my drive into the second bunker, I was about 170 yards out and hit a 6 iron from the bunker to four feet and holed the birdie putt.”

Chris Sherwood and Brandon Ware fought back from 2 down to win a tight match 1 up against Mark Smith and Jamie Allen from East Grinstead’s Chartham Park GC on Saturday which takes Canterbury safely through to the second round of the inaugural Invicta Cup.

Ware said: “Jamie and Mark are tough competitors and play really solid off their handicaps but I feel we made the most of home advantage.”

Skipper Ali Ord’s Canterbury side made it four wins out of four in their ladies’ scratch competition Bradley Cook round-robin group with a storming 5-0 win at Ashford on Sunday.

Angela Jones led off with a two over par round to inflict an 8&7 win on Elaine Campbell, Alison Kingston beat Mary Daly 5&3, Ord won 5&3 against Janet Jones, Caroline Collins beat Corrie Butcher 6&5 and Jen Rutherford ended the rout by beating Beryl Sutherland 7&6.

The Bradley Cook comprises 20 clubs throughout Kent in four divisions of five, playing each other home and away, the group winners go through to the semifinals while the second-placed side go into the semi-finals of the Parallel Plate.

Ord said: “We’re on a roll and had a very good win. We’ve played four matches so far, and won three of them 5-0. The team has done brilliantly.”

Ord and Jacklyn Barons provisionally reached the south regional finals of the R&A’S women’s and girls’ Coronation Foursomes after winning the club round last Wednesday.

If their score of 36 Stableford points makes the cut, they will play in the next stage at Mid Sussex GC at Ditchling in August and the incentive then will be to qualify for the Grand Final at St Andrews in September.

Ord said: “It’s absolutely fingers crossed time that we reach the south finals.

“Just to go and represent the club in a regional final would be great, but the incentive of getting to St Andrews is amazing.”

Claire Wilson scored her seventh victory this year when she won the prestigious Challenge Bowl medal competition on Friday.

The Challenge Bowl is restricted to ladies’ medal competition winners from the previous year and Wilson scored a gross 89, net 71 to win by two shots from Val Binns, who held off third-placed Joy Flynn on countback.

Pauline Nicholls scored a solid gross 95, net 73, for victory in Saturday’s Ladies’ Weekend May Medal.

Canterbury professional Richard Wallis began his summer competition season by winning the Hayling Island Pro-am for the fourth time in five years on Friday.

Wallis shot a bogey-free sevenunder-par 64 over Hayling Island’s par 71 links course to win by six.

Mike Stevenson played the round of his life for his first win at Canterbury in last Wednesday’s men’s midweek Stableford.

Stevenson smashed his personal-best competition score by 12 shots to break 90 for the first time with a two-birdie gross 89, net 65, for 42 points. He won by four from Dean Petch, who scored 38 points to take second by one from Chris Sherwood and fourth-placed Ian Cusselle.

Stephen Bowles scored 41 Stableford points to win last Wednesday’s Captain’s Cup. The competition is open to all past and present club captains and Bowles scored a gross 83, net 66 to win by two from captain Scott Lindsay.

Chris Gay scored 40 Stableford points to win the Octogenarians’ Salver from a field of 20. Nick Swain had 33 points to take second on countback from Gerry Ferrett.

Ben Holcroft, 11, chalked up his second win in a month when he scored 39 points to win Sunday’s junior Stableford by one from 10-year-old Christina Carlotti in a field of 12.

Holcroft had 18 points on the front nine and 21 on the back, including a four-points par at the 13th which he reached with a drive and a 6 iron.
