Worst seaside label unjustified

-

It was reported at the end of April that Kent’s seaside towns had been ranked by Which?, and that Herne Bay had been ranked as the worst in Kent.

This announcement was deemed absurd by some residents. However, to add insult to injury, Kentlive news (which is not owned by the KM Group) published an article agreeing with this verdict, harshly berating the town that I and many others proudly call home.

Few would claim that Herne Bay is the best seaside town in Kent. However, there is a general sentiment that it is far from the worst. Whilst the survey only mentions eight locations, missing out on arguably some of Kent’s best and worst beaches and seaside towns, it is still very much an injustice to label Herne Bay as one of the worst.

For many a family, Herne Bay is a wonderful day out, with enough activities to fill an entire day out and leave plenty for next time. Whether you live in Herne Bay, or travel by car or public transport the seafront is usually nothing more than a short walk away.

An ideal family location, it would likely be impossible to fit everything in, even in a full weekend. Boasting children’s play parks, maintained public gym equipment and many eateries, the eastern side of the pier can provide a wonderful day out for the family.

With a long walk on Neptune’s arm, a while spent admiring the clock tower, a trip inside the town’s museum or a cheeky fish and chips meal flanked by white gulls, there is an entire afternoon’s activities to choose from.

Further on, an expanse of beach awaits a walk to reach the King’s Hall and its ice cream shop or plays.

With both a little and kingsized theatre, numerous open-air sports facilities and countless green spaces, it seems impossible, to me at least, to say that Herne Bay is “a rather dull seaside town with not much offer”.

Far from it, for a perfect family seaside trip or a relocation to escape city air and traffic, Herne Bay is, in my opinion, a worthy candidate.
